Pixel 9a Set to Launch with Notable Differences from the Pixel 9 Series

The Pixel 9 series, including the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, and Pixel 9 Pro Fold, made a significant splash at Google’s recent Made By Google event. These devices showcase Google’s continued commitment to integrating advanced technology into their smartphones, powered by the in-house Tensor G4 SoC alongside the Titan M2 security chip. As anticipation builds for the upcoming Pixel 9a, reports indicate that it will also feature the Tensor G4, but with some key differences, particularly concerning the modem technology.

According to a report from Android Authority, the Pixel 9a is expected to run a variant of the Tensor G4 chip that diverges from what is found in the Pixel 9 series. This device, codenamed “tegu,” will be equipped with the Exynos 5300 modem, which was previously used in the Pixel 8 lineup. In contrast, the Pixel 9 series boasts the more advanced Exynos Modem 5400, which supports features like Satellite SOS, offering improved connectivity options that could be crucial in emergency situations.

While the core silicon of the Tensor G4 in the Pixel 9a is expected to remain the same as that in the Pixel 9 series, there are differences in the packaging method. The Pixel 9a is reported to utilize IPoP (Integrated Package on Package) technology for its chip, unlike the regular Tensor G4 that employs FOPLP (Fan-Out Panel Level Packaging). Samsung notes that while IPoP is thicker and generates more heat than FOPLP, it is less expensive to produce, making it a cost-effective option for mid-range devices.

 

 

This choice in packaging aligns with Google’s strategy for the Pixel A series, which aims to deliver essential features at a more accessible price point. The decision to use a slightly older modem may also help Google maintain competitive pricing for the Pixel 9a while still delivering robust performance with the Tensor G4 chip. As such, consumers can expect the Pixel 9a to be the most budget-friendly option in the Pixel 9 lineup when it launches between March and May next year.

The Pixel 9a’s positioning as an affordable device within the Pixel 9 family is critical for Google, as it appeals to a broader audience who may be looking for high-quality photography, reliable performance, and the latest software features without the premium price tag.
