Tech Group Urges U.S. to Halt AI Chip Export Restrictions Amid Growing Concerns

A coalition of tech companies, including Amazon (AMZN.O), Microsoft (MSFT.O), and Meta (META.O), has urged the Biden administration to reconsider a pending rule that would restrict global access to AI chips. The rule, which could be finalized as soon as Friday, is viewed by the Information Technology Industry Council (ITI) as a threat to U.S. leadership in artificial intelligence.

The proposed rule, backed by the U.S. Commerce Department, aims to regulate AI chip exports to prevent adversaries, particularly China, from gaining access to advanced technologies that could enhance their military capabilities. While the restrictions are framed as a national security measure, industry leaders argue that they could hinder U.S. companies’ ability to compete globally and inadvertently benefit foreign competitors.

In a letter to U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, ITI CEO Jason Oxman expressed concerns about the rushed nature of the rule. Oxman warned that implementing such a consequential policy at the end of President Biden’s term could result in unforeseen consequences, damaging the U.S.’s competitive edge in the rapidly growing AI sector.

The group called for a more measured approach, recommending that any new regulations be introduced as a proposed rule rather than a final one. They stressed the importance of considering the broader geopolitical and economic impact, which could jeopardize the U.S.’s position in global AI development.

The anticipated rule has sparked strong opposition within the tech industry, with the Semiconductor Industry Association and Oracle executives voicing their concerns. Oracle’s executive vice president, Ken Glueck, criticized the measure, describing it as an overly broad regulation that would impact nearly all commercial cloud computing globally.

The Commerce Department and the White House have yet to respond publicly to the mounting criticism, but the issue continues to garner significant attention from both industry leaders and policymakers as the Biden administration enters its final days.

Meta Scraps U.S. Fact-Checking Program Ahead of Trump Administration’s Return

Meta Platforms (META.O) has announced the discontinuation of its fact-checking program in the U.S. and a reduction in its restrictions on controversial topics such as immigration and gender identity. This move, which represents a significant shift in Meta’s approach to political content, comes as the company adjusts to the expected return of President-elect Donald Trump to office.

The decision is seen as a response to conservative criticism, and CEO Mark Zuckerberg has emphasized the importance of returning to the company’s roots in promoting free expression. Meta will instead adopt a “community notes” system, which allows users to contribute to content moderation, similar to the model used by Elon Musk’s X platform. In addition, Meta will scale back its proactive efforts to detect and remove rule-breaking content, focusing its automated systems on high-severity violations like terrorism, child exploitation, and fraud.

Meta’s overhaul of its content moderation approach includes the relocation of teams responsible for writing and reviewing content policies from California to Texas and other U.S. locations. These changes are a result of more than a year of discussions within the company, although the specific details of the relocation remain unclear.

The decision to end the fact-checking program, initiated in 2016, has taken its partner organizations by surprise. Critics argue that the shift may facilitate the spread of disinformation, with some claiming it is politically motivated. Meta’s independent Oversight Board expressed support for the move, while fact-checkers and other journalistic organizations expressed concerns about the impact on credibility.

While these changes are initially limited to the U.S. market, Meta has not yet indicated whether similar adjustments will be made in other regions like the European Union, which has stricter tech regulations under its Digital Services Act.

 

Apple Still Barred from Selling iPhone 16 in Indonesia Despite Investment Deal

Apple remains unable to sell its iPhone 16 in Indonesia, despite reaching a deal to establish a local production facility. The issue stems from the company’s failure to meet Indonesia’s domestic content requirements, which mandate that smartphones sold within the country must contain at least 35% locally made parts.

According to Indonesia’s Industry Minister, Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita, although Apple has signed an agreement to build a facility on Batam Island to produce its Airtag tracking device, this does not fulfill the necessary local content criteria for iPhones. The minister clarified that the production of Airtags does not directly contribute to the local assembly of iPhone components, and therefore, the factory will not help Apple secure the certification needed to sell the iPhone 16 in Indonesia.

While the facility will be worth $1 billion and is expected to begin operations in 2026, the minister emphasized that the local content rule applies strictly to phone components. As of now, Apple has no manufacturing operations in Indonesia, though it has established application developer academies in the country since 2018.

Apple’s ongoing efforts to enter the Indonesian market come after a series of meetings between the company and Indonesia’s government. Apple proposed “innovative investment” solutions, which Indonesia countered with conditions for meeting local manufacturing requirements.
