Italy’s Defence Minister Denies Any Agreement with Starlink for Secure Communications

Italy’s Defence Minister, Guido Crosetto, sought to calm political tensions on Wednesday following reports that Italy was in talks with Elon Musk’s Starlink to supply secure communications for the military. Crosetto clarified to parliament that no contracts or agreements had been signed with SpaceX, the company behind Starlink, and that the defence ministry had not approved any such deal.

Musk had earlier indicated his willingness to assist Italy, mentioning that Starlink’s satellite-based system could provide secure communications for Italian diplomats and defence officials operating in sensitive Mediterranean regions. A reported €1.5 billion ($1.6 billion) deal over five years has drawn sharp criticism from opposition parties, raising concerns about entrusting such an important service to a private company owned by Musk.

Crosetto emphasized that Italy was still evaluating various technical solutions for encrypted communications and suggested that the country could develop its own equipment if necessary. He also referred to Musk’s comments about other European countries potentially using the system once it was in place in Italy.

Opposition lawmaker Nicola Fratoianni expressed concern over Crosetto’s stance, arguing that national security should not be entrusted to a private monopolist. The possibility of Starlink offering a quicker solution compared to the EU’s IRIS2 satellite constellation has added urgency to the debate.

Ferdinando Nelli Feroci, former Italian ambassador and head of a foreign policy think tank, advised that the matter should be approached with transparency and an open public tender process. He noted that if multiple bidders were involved, and Musk’s proposal emerged as the best option in terms of cost, benefits, and quality, it could be considered.

 

Blue Origin’s New Glenn Rocket Scheduled for Maiden Launch in January

The inaugural mission will not carry a commercial payload. Instead, it will feature the Blue Ring Pathfinder, a simulator designed to test the New Glenn rocket’s payload systems. This mission is focused on verifying key technologies and capabilities, such as the rocket’s ability to deliver payloads to orbit, as well as the innovative technology that allows the rocket’s first stage to land on a sea platform after launch. Reusable technology is one of Blue Origin’s core goals, with the New Glenn rocket booster designed for up to 25 flights, a feature that positions it as a direct competitor to SpaceX’s Falcon and Starship rockets, which also focus on reusability.

One of the standout features of the New Glenn rocket is its 23-foot payload fairing, which is larger than that of many of its competitors. This capability allows the rocket to accommodate a wider range of payloads, giving it flexibility in handling various mission profiles. The first test flight will serve as a critical opportunity to evaluate crucial systems such as communications, tracking, and telemetry, all of which are vital for the success of future missions. These assessments are important steps toward refining the rocket’s design and preparing for commercial launches.

Honeywell and NXP Semiconductors Expand Partnership to Advance Aviation and Autonomous Flying Technology

Honeywell and NXP Semiconductors have announced an expansion of their partnership to develop artificial intelligence-driven technology aimed at revolutionizing aviation and autonomous flying. The collaboration will combine Honeywell’s Anthem avionics system, a cloud-connected cockpit, with NXP’s advanced computing architecture to enhance flight planning and management.

The focus of the partnership will be on adapting NXP’s autonomy technology, initially designed for the automotive industry, to work with Honeywell’s Anthem system. This will be aimed at advancing autonomous flying technology, which has become a central focus in the aviation industry, particularly with the rise of electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft designed for urban travel.

Although the financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, it builds on the two companies’ previous collaboration last year, which centered around Honeywell’s building management systems.
