Substack introduces the ability for writers to apply paywalls to their ‘Chat’ discussion spaces
Substack’s latest feature allows writers to paywall their entire Chat or specific threads, restricting access to paid or founding members. This move comes 18 months after the launch of Chat, offering writers a direct channel to engage with their dedicated readers.
The company sees paywalled Chats as a means to foster intimate conversations and shield discussions from disruptive elements like trolls. Additionally, it serves as an added benefit for paying readers. Substack’s data indicates that active Chat participants are more likely to retain their subscriptions by 12%.
Writers now have the flexibility to choose whether to apply the paywall to an entire Chat or individual threads within it. When a Chat is paywalled, free subscribers and non-subscribers will encounter prompts encouraging them to upgrade their subscription to access the content.
In addition to the paywall feature, Substack is enhancing the Chat interface to improve user experience, particularly in larger groups. Among the upgrades is the introduction of a search functionality for Chats, allowing users to easily locate older threads. Moreover, thread notifications and new reply badges will help users stay on track within conversations, preventing them from losing their place.
Substack is also upgrading its backend systems to enable real-time loading of new Chats and replies. This enhancement ensures that users can seamlessly engage in live discussions and stay updated on ongoing conversations without delay.
