Donald Trump Grants Full Pardon to Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao, Removing Restrictions
Trump Grants Full Pardon to Binance Founder Changpeng Zhao
US President Donald Trump has issued a full pardon to Changpeng Zhao, commonly known as CZ, the founder of Binance, following his 2023 guilty plea related to enabling money laundering while leading the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange. The pardon lifts previous restrictions that had prevented Zhao from operating financial businesses and marks a significant development in the ongoing debate over the US government’s approach to the cryptocurrency sector. Binance and Zhao both welcomed the decision, with the company calling it “incredible news” and emphasizing CZ’s impact on the growth of the broader crypto ecosystem.
CZ Cleared to Resume Leadership
Last year, Zhao received a four-month prison sentence after stepping down as Binance CEO in 2023. His sentence was part of a $4.3 billion settlement with the US Department of Justice, addressing violations of the Bank Secrecy Act and the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. Prosecutors argued that Binance had failed to implement adequate anti-money-laundering measures and had allowed users to circumvent US sanctions, raising concerns over illicit financial flows and regulatory compliance.
Controversy and Regulatory Concerns
The case drew significant attention from regulators and policymakers. Former Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen had warned that Binance’s operational gaps allowed illicit funds to reach child abusers, cybercriminals, and terrorists, highlighting the potential risks posed by poorly regulated cryptocurrency platforms. Despite these concerns, the Trump administration’s pardon removes these operational restrictions, allowing Zhao to re-engage fully with the cryptocurrency sector.
CZ’s Response and Future Plans
Following the pardon, Zhao expressed his gratitude on X, formerly known as Twitter. He stated he was “deeply grateful for today’s pardon and to President Trump for upholding America’s commitment to fairness, innovation, and justice.” Zhao also reaffirmed his commitment to advancing Web3 initiatives and promoting the United States as a global hub for cryptocurrency innovation, signaling a renewed push to shape the future of digital finance.
