Bluesky Unlocks Post Viewing: No Login Required for Users

Bluesky, the decentralized social network positioned as a competitor to Twitter, has recently introduced a new feature allowing users to access posts without requiring a login. While individuals still necessitate an invitation to register and contribute content, they can now peruse posts through direct links.

This update also facilitates publishers’ ability to link or embed Bluesky posts within blogs, expanding the platform’s reach. Moreover, users have the option to share these posts within individual or group chats.

For privacy control, Bluesky users can manage visibility settings via Settings > Moderation > Logged-out visibility, allowing them to restrict their posts from being viewable by users who are not logged in. Notably, this setting is applicable solely within Bluesky’s website and its native app. However, the company cautioned that third-party clients might not adhere to this preference, potentially displaying posts irrespective of the toggle. Therefore, users seeking to limit their posts’ visibility to a narrower audience may opt to set their profile to private.

In a recent blog release, Jay Graber, the CEO of Bluesky, unveiled a distinctive butterfly emoji logo, a departure from the previous generic depiction of a blue sky with clouds. Graber explained the inspiration behind the change, highlighting how users had organically adopted the butterfly emoji 🦋 to represent their Bluesky identities. Embracing this trend, the company embraced the butterfly symbol as it resonated with their vision of reshaping social media into something innovative and transformative.

This year marked significant milestones for Bluesky as it successfully launched its dedicated iOS and Android applications, amassing a user base of over 2 million individuals. Responding to past critiques about content moderation, the platform introduced a range of new moderation tools to address concerns about the nature of content allowed on the network. Currently, Bluesky stands as the sole instance on the AT Protocol but is actively working towards federation in the upcoming year. This move aims to broaden its reach, enabling compatibility with more servers and instances while establishing their respective sets of regulations and guidelines.

Bluesky’s announcement arrives amidst Meta’s Threads initiating experiments involving ActivityPub integration. Following Meta’s recent declaration, key figures such as Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, and members of the Threads team, have begun making their accounts and posts visible on Mastodon and other compatible applications, signaling a potential shift in how social media platforms interact and interconnect.
