Seamless Setup: Google Introduces eSIM Transfer Feature During Android Smartphone Configuration, According to Reports

Effortless Transition: Google’s Setup for Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra Facilitates Seamless SIM Transfer from Previous Devices

Google has reportedly introduced a noteworthy feature that allows users to seamlessly transfer eSIMs—embedded digital SIM cards that facilitate the activation of mobile plans—across different Android smartphones. Initially spotted when users successfully transferred their eSIM from an older Pixel phone to the Pixel 8 last year, the feature has now expanded its compatibility to the Samsung Galaxy S24 series, indicating a broader application beyond Pixel devices.

According to Android Police, the setup process for the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra incorporates a prompt asking users if they wish to transfer their SIM from another device. Upon confirming the transfer, users are guided to unlock their existing device and place it in close proximity to the new phone. Subsequently, a popup appears on the older phone’s screen, initiating the eSIM transfer process.

The process involves scanning a QR code, mirroring the steps typically associated with setting up a new eSIM. This seamless eSIM transfer capability eliminates the need for users to visit a physical store, offering the convenience of digitally migrating their SIM card from one device to another without the hassle associated with traditional physical SIM cards.

The expansion of this feature from Pixel phones to the Samsung Galaxy S24 series underlines Google’s commitment to enhancing user convenience and streamlining the transition process between Android devices.

Last year, Google announced at MWC 2023 that it would introduce the ability to transfer eSIMs across devices, while allowing users to convert their existing physical SIM to an eSIM. While the feature was previously spotted last year when Pixel 8 owners were upgrading from an older Pixel phone, its appearance on the Galaxy S24 Ultra is a sign that Google is expanding the feature to other OEMs.

However, the feature to transfer your existing eSIM to another phone isn’t widely available at the moment. The Android Police report states that the feature currently works with T-Mobile eSIM profiles. If you live in other regions, including India, you will have to wait until your telecom operator supports Google’s transfer feature to move your existing eSIM to another Android smartphone.
