Google Launches Windows Search App Featuring Spotlight-Style Functionality
Google is rolling out a new experimental search app for Windows through its Search Labs initiative, aiming to make searching faster and more integrated. Users can activate the app with a simple Alt + Space shortcut, allowing them to instantly search local files, installed apps, Google Drive, and the web. The functionality is reminiscent of Apple’s Spotlight search, recently updated in macOS Tahoe, offering a seamless experience for finding information across multiple platforms.
The app also incorporates Google Lens, enabling on-screen translation, visual searches, and even help with math problems. Additionally, an AI Mode is available for tackling more complex queries, providing users with intelligent suggestions and answers. Search results can be filtered by type, and the app supports dark mode, enhancing usability for different working environments. Currently, the app is available in English (US) and compatible with both Windows 10 and Windows 11.
According to a blog post on Tuesday, the Windows search app is accessible to personal accounts through Search Labs. Once installed, users are prompted to sign in with their Google account, much like with Google Chrome, which allows for personalized search results and integration with Google services. This ensures that both local and cloud-based searches are streamlined in a single interface.
Google Lens further extends the app’s capabilities by allowing users to capture images directly from their screens for instant searches or translations. By combining local file access, cloud integration, and AI-powered tools, the new app positions itself as a comprehensive productivity tool for Windows users, bridging the gap between desktop and web-based search functionalities.
