JPMorgan Hires Guggenheim Executive to Boost Mid-Cap Tech Investment Banking

JPMorgan Chase is bolstering its technology investment banking division with the addition of Mike Amez, a senior executive from Guggenheim Securities, according to an internal staff memo reviewed by Reuters. Amez is set to join the bank in September as Head of Mid-Cap Technology Services, based in Chicago.

In the memo, Global Co-Heads of Technology Investment Banking Chris Grose and Greg Mendelson said Amez brings a deep background in IT services, cybersecurity, and cloud infrastructure, with a career focused on building enduring client relationships in the fast-evolving tech landscape. At Guggenheim, he was a Senior Managing Director in its tech investment banking group.

Amez’s appointment is part of JPMorgan’s ongoing expansion of its technology banking franchise, especially targeting medium-sized tech companies, a fast-growing market segment. The hire comes just weeks after the bank added four senior executives from Goldman Sachs, Bank of America, and Lazard to strengthen its West Coast tech banking operations.

Already a dominant force in technology dealmaking, JPMorgan is sharpening its sub-sector expertise to maintain its lead, according to Dealogic data. The bank has recently played a central advisory role in high-profile transactions, including:

  • Global Payments’ $24.25 billion acquisition of Worldpay,

  • Turn/River’s $4.4 billion buyout of SolarWinds,

  • DoorDash’s $3.9 billion takeover of Deliveroo,

  • And CoreWeave’s $23 billion public listing in March.

JPMorgan’s continued investment in specialized talent suggests a clear strategy to deepen market penetration in niche but fast-growing tech verticals, especially as deal activity rebounds in select sectors like AI, cloud, and fintech.

CoreWeave Gains Role in Google-OpenAI Cloud Deal to Supply AI Computing Power

CoreWeave, a specialized cloud computing company built on Nvidia GPUs, has become a key provider in Google’s new partnership with OpenAI, sources told Reuters. Under the deal, CoreWeave will supply computing capacity to Google Cloud, which will then sell these resources to OpenAI to support growing demand for AI services such as ChatGPT. Google will also contribute some of its own computing infrastructure directly to OpenAI.

This arrangement underscores the evolving relationship between major cloud hyperscalers like Google, Microsoft, and Amazon and emerging “neocloud” providers like CoreWeave, which focus heavily on AI workloads. CoreWeave went public in March and already has a significant presence in OpenAI’s infrastructure, holding a five-year $11.9 billion contract and an equity investment of $350 million from OpenAI.

The partnership was expanded last month with an additional agreement worth up to $4 billion through 2029. Bringing Google Cloud onboard as a customer helps CoreWeave diversify its revenue while leveraging Google’s deep pockets to secure better financing for data center expansions. For Google, it enhances its cloud business by tapping into the surging AI market and positions it as a neutral provider of compute resources amid competition with Amazon and Microsoft.

CoreWeave’s stock has surged over 270% since its IPO, reflecting strong investor confidence despite concerns over leverage and GPU demand shifts. Meanwhile, Microsoft, CoreWeave’s former largest customer, is reconsidering its data center strategy and renegotiating investment terms with OpenAI.

Neither CoreWeave, Google, nor OpenAI commented on the details of the deal.

Amazon Pledges $20 Billion Investment to Expand Cloud Infrastructure in Pennsylvania

Amazon.com announced on Monday a plan to invest at least $20 billion in Pennsylvania to significantly expand its data center infrastructure. This move adds to Amazon’s multi-billion-dollar commitments supporting the rapid growth of artificial intelligence technologies.

The Pennsylvania investment follows closely after Amazon’s recent announcements to invest $10 billion in North Carolina and over $5 billion in new cloud infrastructure projects in Taiwan. These investments highlight the tech giant’s strategy to boost its cloud computing capacity amid intense competition in generative AI and cloud services.

Amazon expects the Pennsylvania project to create 1,250 high-skilled jobs directly, while also supporting thousands more jobs across the Amazon Web Services (AWS) data center supply chain. Salem Township and Falls Township have been identified as initial locations for new data center campuses.

The company reported capital expenditures of approximately $25 billion in the first quarter of 2025 and indicated plans to maintain this spending level throughout the year. It has not yet clarified whether the $20 billion in Pennsylvania is included in the current expenditure plans or provided a specific timeline for the investment.
