Microsoft and OpenAI are conducting an investigation into whether a group associated with Chinese AI startup DeepSeek improperly accessed OpenAI’s data. According to sources familiar with the matter, concerns arose when Microsoft’s security team detected unusual activity involving OpenAI’s application programming interface (API). The group in question allegedly extracted large amounts of data in a manner that may not have been authorized, prompting further scrutiny from both companies.

The suspicious activity was first observed in the fall when Microsoft researchers noticed individuals believed to be linked to DeepSeek transferring significant volumes of data via OpenAI’s API. While OpenAI allows developers to license its API to integrate its AI models into their own applications, excessive data extraction could indicate an attempt to bypass OpenAI’s built-in usage restrictions. If confirmed, such actions may violate OpenAI’s terms of service, raising legal and ethical concerns over the security of proprietary AI models.

DeepSeek recently introduced its own AI model, R1, an open-source system that claims to rival or surpass leading AI models from OpenAI, Google, and Meta on key industry benchmarks. The model, designed to replicate human reasoning, has positioned DeepSeek as a formidable competitor in the AI sector. Notably, R1 was developed at a fraction of the cost of its Western counterparts, further intensifying competition in the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence.

The potential unauthorized access and the emergence of a strong competitor have already had significant market repercussions. Following the news, AI-related stocks, including Microsoft, Nvidia, Oracle, and Google’s parent company, Alphabet, saw a sharp decline, collectively losing nearly $1 trillion in market value. Windows 11 May Introduce Quick File Sharing Options, Hints Latest Preview Build

Microsoft is testing a new way to share files in Windows 11, as spotted in the latest preview build. The feature, called “Drag Tray,” allows users to drag files to the top of the screen in File Explorer, where a tray of sharing options appears. This method, similar to file-sharing gestures on smartphones, makes it easier to send files via apps like Outlook, Mail, or Phone Link. Although Microsoft has not officially announced this feature, multiple users have reported its presence in Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 22635.4805.

The discovery was highlighted by X user Phantomofearth (@phantomofearth), who shared a video demonstrating how the Drag Tray works. According to the user, this functionality simplifies file sharing by integrating quick shortcuts directly into the File Explorer UI. Once a file is dragged to the top of the screen, a tray opens with available sharing options, allowing users to send files seamlessly without navigating through menus. This improvement brings Windows 11’s file-sharing experience closer to what users are accustomed to on Android and iOS.

Interestingly, the Drag Tray feature was not mentioned in Microsoft’s official release notes for the update. However, Phantomofearth revealed that it can be manually enabled using a third-party tool called ViVeTool. By entering the command “/enable /id:45624564,53397005” and rebooting the system, users can activate the feature ahead of its official rollout.

While the Drag Tray is currently experimental, it could be part of Microsoft’s broader effort to refine Windows 11’s usability. If the feature proves successful in testing, it is likely to become a standard addition in future Windows 11 updates, making file sharing more intuitive and efficient.

OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, is set to debut its first-ever television commercial during the 2025 Super Bowl, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal. The Super Bowl, renowned for its massive audience and high-profile advertising opportunities, is an ideal platform for brands seeking widespread visibility. The event is expected to generate significant buzz, especially given the creative nature of Super Bowl ads.

This marks OpenAI’s first move into commercial advertising, following the footsteps of competitors like Google, which promoted its AI capabilities during last year’s Super Bowl. OpenAI, which did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment, has rapidly expanded its influence since launching ChatGPT in late 2022. OpenAI, which is partly owned by Microsoft, is in discussions to raise as much as $40 billion, placing its valuation at around $300 billion. The company also appointed its first chief marketing officer, Kate Rouch, in December 2024, signaling its growing emphasis on branding and public outreach.
