Alphabet Plans Massive Capex Increase as Cloud Revenue Growth Slows

Alphabet (GOOGL.O) announced plans to spend $75 billion on its AI infrastructure in 2025, a 29% increase over Wall Street’s expectations. This announcement led to a 9% drop in Alphabet’s stock in after-hours trading as investors expressed disappointment with the company’s missed cloud revenue target and growing concerns over its profitability.

Alphabet’s planned capex for 2025 exceeds analysts’ expectations of $58 billion and marks a dramatic increase from the $52.5 billion spent in 2024. CEO Sundar Pichai defended this surge in investment, citing the enormous potential of the AI space and promising that the cost of AI technology would continue to decrease, making it more accessible. Despite this optimism, Alphabet reported a slowdown in its cloud revenue growth, which failed to meet projections.

The company’s cloud business saw a 30% rise in revenue, reaching $11.96 billion for the fourth quarter. However, this was a deceleration from the 35% growth in the previous quarter and missed the expected $12.16 billion. Pichai emphasized that the Gemini family of AI models would drive further growth within the cloud platform, noting that developer usage of Gemini had doubled in the last six months.

Alphabet’s capital spending is primarily focused on building servers and data centers to support its AI initiatives. The company’s cloud segment has faced heightened competition, especially from rivals like Microsoft and Amazon, with the latter set to release its quarterly results soon.

Meanwhile, Alphabet’s core advertising business, which represents around 75% of total revenue, showed positive performance, with ad revenue growing 10.6% to $72.46 billion in the fourth quarter. YouTube contributed significantly to this growth, with ad revenue increasing by 13.8%.

Alphabet’s overall revenue for the quarter rose 12% to $96.47 billion, surpassing analyst expectations, while profits came in at $2.15 per share, above the forecasted $2.13 per share.

YouTube has unveiled a set of experimental features exclusively for its Premium subscribers, aiming to refine the user experience with enhanced audio quality, faster playback speeds, and improved multitasking options. These new additions cater to both music video enthusiasts and short-form content consumers, making premium membership even more enticing. Additionally, a new, more affordable subscription tier has been introduced in the U.S., though it comes with certain restrictions.

One of the most notable updates is the improved audio quality for music videos, allowing users to enjoy playback at 256kbps. This upgrade ensures a richer listening experience, particularly for those who rely on YouTube as their primary music streaming platform. Additionally, the ‘Jump Ahead’ feature, previously available only on mobile, is now accessible via web browsers, letting users skip directly to key moments in videos with ease.

For iOS users, YouTube Shorts now includes picture-in-picture mode, making it easier to multitask while watching short-form content. Another valuable addition is smart downloads, which automatically save recommended Shorts for offline viewing. This feature helps users stay entertained even without an internet connection, streamlining the experience for those who frequently consume bite-sized videos on the go.

Furthermore, YouTube has expanded playback speed options, now allowing videos to be played at up to 4x speed. This caters to users who prefer consuming content more efficiently, particularly for educational or informational videos. These enhancements collectively reinforce YouTube Premium’s value proposition, giving subscribers a more flexible and high-quality viewing experience.

EU Tech Companies Agree to Stronger Measures Against Online Hate Speech

Meta’s Facebook, Elon Musk’s X, Google’s YouTube, and other tech giants have agreed to enhance their efforts to combat online hate speech under a revised code of conduct, which will now be incorporated into the European Union’s Digital Services Act (DSA). The update aims to make these platforms more accountable in tackling harmful content.

  • Revised Code of Conduct: Facebook, X, YouTube, and others have committed to improving their approach to addressing illegal hate speech on their platforms, under the updated voluntary code of conduct, initially launched in May 2016. This code will now align with the requirements of the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), which mandates tech companies to take stronger action against harmful and illegal online content.
  • Tech Companies’ Pledge: In addition to enhancing detection mechanisms, companies like Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, and Twitch, alongside the bigger players, have agreed to measures such as using automatic detection tools for hate speech and ensuring that at least two-thirds of hate speech notices are reviewed within 24 hours. They will also provide data on how their recommendation systems contribute to the spread of harmful content.
  • Transparency and Oversight: The updated code will also allow public and non-profit entities with expertise in hate speech to monitor how platforms handle hate speech notices. This will increase the transparency and accountability of tech companies, with a focus on issues like race, ethnicity, religion, and gender identity.
  • EU’s Position on Hate Speech: EU tech commissioner Henna Virkkunen emphasized that the European Union has no tolerance for illegal hate speech, whether online or offline. The strengthened code aligns with the DSA, which is pushing for stricter regulations on tech companies to address online harms and ensure that harmful content is swiftly removed.
