A recent reanalysis of data from NASA’s Voyager 2 spacecraft, collected during its 1986 flyby of Uranus, has uncovered new details about the planet’s highly unusual magnetosphere. Published on November 11 in Nature Astronomy, the study reveals that a rare solar wind event caused Uranus’s magnetic field to undergo significant distortion. The findings highlight the unique behavior of Uranus’s magnetosphere, which differs dramatically from those of other planets in the solar system, offering new perspectives on planetary magnetic fields and their interactions with solar activity.

According to Jamie Jasinski, lead author of the study and planetary scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Voyager 2’s arrival at Uranus coincided with an intense blast of solar wind, an event occurring near the planet only about 4% of the time. This rare interaction compressed Uranus’s magnetosphere, revealing its atypical structure and dynamics. Jasinski noted that this timing was crucial; had Voyager 2 arrived a week earlier or later, it might have missed these extraordinary conditions, potentially leading to a very different understanding of Uranus’s magnetic behavior.

Unlike Earth’s relatively stable and well-aligned magnetic field, Uranus’s magnetosphere is shaped by its extreme axial tilt of 98 degrees and an off-center magnetic axis. These factors create a unique “open-closed” magnetic process, where the magnetosphere alternates between states in response to solar wind fluctuations. This cyclical opening and closing make Uranus’s magnetic environment one of the most dynamic in the solar system. Voyager 2’s measurements captured this variability, revealing a magnetosphere that behaves unpredictably, influenced by both the planet’s rotation and external solar forces.

The study sheds light on how Uranus’s unusual magnetic field could impact future exploration of the ice giant. Understanding the planet’s magnetic dynamics will be crucial for future missions, especially for studying its interactions with the solar wind and its effect on Uranus’s atmosphere and moons. 92-Year-Old Edwin Rayner Becomes TikTok Sensation with ‘Grandad Sings’

Edwin Rayner, a 92-year-old singer from Bournemouth, Dorset, has taken TikTok by storm, amassing nearly half a million followers and millions of views. His journey to social media fame began after the loss of his wife, Margaret, whom he had been married to for 60 years. Feeling adrift after her passing, Edwin found new purpose when, he believes, Margaret sent him a message urging him to sing again.

“I was given a message, and I’m sure it was Margaret telling me: ‘You can sing, come on, you need to start again,'” Edwin shared. He began performing at local care homes, often belting out tunes by his favorite artist, Elvis Presley. But it wasn’t until his granddaughters introduced him to TikTok that Edwin’s online career took off.

“I had no idea what it was,” he recalled, laughing. “After a few days, I had over a thousand likes. I thought, ‘Well, that’s a good start,’ and it just kept going from there.”

Known on social media as Grandad Sings, Edwin now has almost nine million views on TikTok, along with 150,000 followers on Instagram. His granddaughters assist with uploading one song each week, recorded at a local studio with the help of a musician. Over the past year, Edwin released a Christmas album and is now working on his eighth album, which he shares with family and friends but cannot sell due to copyright restrictions.

A lifelong singer, Edwin served as an RAF medic in North Africa from 1950 to 1952. Later, he ran a successful tropical fish business in Tenerife. Despite the hardships of aging, Edwin credits his family and his wife’s memory for his resilience.

“Age doesn’t matter,” he said. “People think at 90, 92, you’re finished. You’re not. Keep doing whatever you want to do. Only do it more so.”

One of Edwin’s favorite songs to perform is “The Wonder of You” by Elvis Presley, which he dedicates to his late wife. He often reflects on how Margaret continues to guide him, saying, “I feel that she’s with me, she’s there all the time. She’s probably watching right now telling me what to say, or what not to say. Huawei Launches Mate 70 with Own HarmonyOS, Moving Away from Android

Huawei has introduced its latest flagship, the Mate 70 smartphone, marking a significant milestone in its post-Android journey. The device, priced at 5,499 yuan ($760), is powered by Huawei’s own HarmonyOS Next, a departure from Android-based applications. This move underscores Huawei’s ongoing efforts to protect itself from further U.S. sanctions, which have restricted access to foreign technology.

At the launch event, Richard Yu, chairman of Huawei’s consumer business, described the Mate 70 as the company’s most powerful phone in the Mate series, highlighting that HarmonyOS Next is a “pure-blooded” technology developed entirely by Huawei’s engineers. From 2024 onward, all of Huawei’s new smartphones and tablets will run on HarmonyOS, signaling the company’s intent to break away from the Android ecosystem entirely.

The Mate 70 succeeds last year’s Mate 60 series, which surprised the tech industry with its advanced chip technology despite stringent U.S. export controls. This success, along with the introduction of the Mate 60 Pro in August 2023, has reignited interest in Huawei’s high-end smartphones and brought the company back into the premium segment.

Lucas Zhong, a research analyst at Canalys, described the release as a “critical step” for Huawei’s software strategy, emphasizing that moving away from Android would be crucial for the company to strengthen consumer loyalty and attract users looking for alternatives to Google’s and Apple’s operating systems.

Huawei has seen significant growth in the Chinese market, especially in the premium segment. According to Canalys, the company’s share of phones priced over $600 surged from 11% in Q3 2022 to 33% in the same period this year. In contrast, Apple’s share of this market dropped from 72% to 52%.

Huawei, once the world’s second-largest smartphone maker, has struggled since being placed on a U.S. trade blacklist in 2019, which restricted its access to key technologies, including Google’s Android operating system. As a result, Huawei was forced to sell its budget mobile brand, Honor, in a bid to survive.

The original HarmonyOS was introduced in August 2019, supporting Android-based apps, after Huawei’s U.S. blacklisting. Over time, the company has invested heavily in developing a fully homegrown operating system and has gained support from major Chinese tech firms to build a compatible app ecosystem.

Huawei aims to develop a robust application ecosystem for HarmonyOS, with plans to have 100,000 apps available within a year. Eric Xu, Huawei’s former rotating chairman, has stated that building this ecosystem in China first is key to eventually expanding it globally.

Analysts predict that the Mate 70 series could see over 10 million shipments over its lifetime. However, building a competitive ecosystem for HarmonyOS will take time, as the company works to expand its developer community.
