OpenAI Unveils Restructuring Plans to Create Public Benefit Corporation

OpenAI announced plans to restructure its organization, creating a public benefit corporation (PBC) to facilitate easier fundraising and remove constraints imposed by its current nonprofit parent. This change follows growing competition in the artificial intelligence sector, where companies are increasingly focused on developing artificial general intelligence (AGI) capable of surpassing human intelligence.

The new PBC structure is designed to balance the pursuit of shareholder value with the broader societal interests of AI development. Under this plan, OpenAI’s for-profit arm would transition to a Delaware-based PBC, allowing it to raise more capital while maintaining a commitment to public good. The nonprofit will retain a significant interest in the PBC and will be one of the best-resourced nonprofits globally.

The restructuring follows OpenAI’s $6.6 billion funding round, which valued the company at $157 billion and was contingent on altering the company’s profit-sharing structure. The move aligns OpenAI with competitors like Anthropic and Musk’s xAI, which have adopted similar structures to attract investments.

Despite the restructuring’s potential, OpenAI faces opposition. Elon Musk, a co-founder of OpenAI, has criticized the shift, arguing that the company’s push for profit is prioritizing financial gain over its public mission. He has even filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging that the company’s actions have violated the spirit of its original mission. Meta Platforms has also called for California’s attorney general to block the conversion, emphasizing concerns about the impact on public good.

Although becoming a benefit corporation doesn’t mandate prioritizing mission over profit, it formally declares the intent to balance both. However, the enforcement of this balance relies on the company’s shareholders rather than legal provisions.

 

Beijing Introduces Regulations to Promote Driverless Vehicles

Beijing has unveiled new regulations designed to foster the growth of autonomous driving technology within the city, with plans to eventually permit driverless public buses and taxis. Starting April 1, 2025, autonomous vehicles that pass road testing and safety assessments will be eligible to apply for road trials. The city’s new rules support the use of self-driving vehicles for private cars, buses, trams, and taxis, and encourage the development of intelligent road infrastructure to accommodate these vehicles.

This initiative is part of a broader effort by Chinese authorities to accelerate the adoption of autonomous driving technology. At least 19 cities across China, including Beijing, have already begun testing robotaxis and robobuses. Major companies such as Apollo Go, a subsidiary of Baidu, and Pony.ai are expanding their robotaxi fleets, with Baidu planning to deploy 1,000 robotaxis in Wuhan by the end of 2024 and Pony.ai aiming for over 1,000 vehicles by 2026.

Additionally, Tesla is seeking regulatory approval to launch its full self-driving (FSD) technology in China by the first quarter of 2025, with plans to produce its own robotaxis by 2026.

 

Goodman Group Surges Amid Australian Data-Centre Expansion

Goodman Group’s stock has soared this year, outshining its Australian property peers thanks to its strategic push into the data-centre sector. The rising demand for artificial intelligence services has driven major cloud service providers, including Amazon, Microsoft, and Meta, to invest heavily in data centres. This trend has sparked a surge in Australia’s nascent data-centre market, with companies like Blackstone and NEXTDC also making significant investments.

Goodman Group, Australia’s largest property developer, counts leading global hyperscalers as customers. While the company has not disclosed the identities of these clients, its portfolio clearly reflects the growing need for data centres, with 42% of its A$12.8 billion portfolio under construction dedicated to these specialized facilities. This expansion has helped boost Goodman’s stock by 45.8% this year, positioning it for its best performance since 2006.

Despite the strong growth, some market analysts caution that the high valuations of data-centre-focused stocks might signal a cooling investor sentiment. Concerns include the potential for obsolescence in data-centre infrastructure and increased competition in the market. However, Goodman’s robust pipeline, access to land with power supply, and ongoing investment into the sector continue to fuel optimism about its future prospects.
