Apple’s iPhone Sales Lead Chinese Market in May Amid Global Growth, Says Counterpoint Research

Apple’s iPhone sales surged to the number one position in China in May, marking the company’s strongest two-month global sales growth since the COVID-19 pandemic, according to data from Counterpoint Research. The tech giant experienced a 15% year-on-year increase in global iPhone sales during April and May.

This growth was mainly driven by rebounds in Apple’s two largest markets: China and the United States. Counterpoint Research also reported double-digit sales increases in Japan, India, and Middle Eastern markets, further contributing to the positive trend.

Ivan Lam, Senior Analyst at Counterpoint Research, noted that the second-quarter iPhone performance is promising but emphasized that the market dynamics in the U.S. and China remain critical determinants for overall success.

Data from the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology showed that shipments of foreign-branded phones in China rose slightly to 3.52 million units in April, up from 3.50 million the previous year.

Despite the growth, Apple faces intense competition from Chinese domestic smartphone brands. To remain competitive, the company has implemented price cuts, with Chinese e-commerce platforms offering discounts of up to 2,530 yuan (approximately $351) on the latest iPhone 16 models in May.

AMD Collaborates with AI Startups to Enhance Chip and Software Development

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) is strengthening its ties with a range of artificial intelligence startups to improve both its chip hardware and software ecosystems, aiming to better compete against dominant players like Nvidia.

In its pursuit to build a competitive line of AI chips, AMD has acquired companies such as server maker ZT Systems and several small software firms to boost its talent pool and software capabilities. The company is focused on enhancing ROCm, its AI software platform, to better support the complex needs of AI developers.

Vamsi Boppana, AMD’s senior vice president of AI, described the effort as a “thoughtful, deliberate, multi-generational journey” aimed at creating hardware and software that meet evolving AI demands.

One of AMD’s key customers benefiting from these software improvements is AI enterprise startup Cohere, which focuses on building AI models tailored for large businesses. Cohere CEO Aidan Gomez said AMD’s enhancements have drastically shortened the time it takes to adapt their software to AMD chips—from weeks down to days—improving agility in deployment.

On the hardware front, OpenAI has played a notable role in shaping AMD’s upcoming MI450 series AI chips. Forrest Norrod, AMD’s executive vice president, revealed that feedback from OpenAI influenced the design of the MI450’s memory architecture and chip scalability to accommodate thousands of chips working together for AI applications. OpenAI also guided AMD on optimizing the chips for specific mathematical operations vital for AI workloads.

The MI400 series will underpin AMD’s new “Helios” server expected next year, designed to rival Nvidia’s integrated AI servers that link hundreds or thousands of GPUs.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman appeared alongside AMD at their recent San Jose event, highlighting the ongoing collaboration between the two organizations.

Deutsche Telekom and Nvidia Team Up to Build AI Cloud for European Manufacturers in Germany

Deutsche Telekom and Nvidia announced a strategic partnership on Friday to create an artificial intelligence cloud tailored for European manufacturers, based in Germany. Nvidia will provide 10,000 graphics processing units (GPUs) to be integrated into Deutsche Telekom’s existing data centers as part of this initiative.

The project aims for implementation by 2026 and represents a critical step toward building large-scale data centers, which are key to Germany’s push to modernize its industrial sector. This move also aligns with the European Union’s broader goal to close the AI infrastructure gap with global competitors like the U.S. and China.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang revealed plans for the AI cloud platform in Germany earlier this week and announced Deutsche Telekom’s participation during a meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

Merz emphasized the significance of investments in AI infrastructure for Germany’s innovation and economic future, praising Nvidia and its partners’ commitment. He described the partnership as a vital step for strengthening Germany’s digital sovereignty.

GPUs have become essential for advancing AI capabilities. Under Chancellor Merz’s leadership, Germany plans to develop large data centers supported by state subsidies covering 35% of costs, while the industry is expected to cover the remaining 65%. The government aims to secure up to 100,000 GPUs to meet growing AI demands.

Earlier this year, the European Commission unveiled a $20 billion funding plan to accelerate AI data center construction across Europe.

Deutsche Telekom recently announced collaborations with companies like SAP, web hosting firm Ionos, and retailer Schwarz to seek EU support for building large data centers in Germany.

Nvidia is also working with European AI company Mistral to develop AI computing platforms powered by 18,000 Nvidia GPUs to serve European businesses.
