The U.S. government has imposed sanctions on 12 executives and senior leaders of Kaspersky, a prominent cybersecurity firm based in Russia. The Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) announced these measures to safeguard against cyber threats deemed malicious.

According to a press release, Under Secretary Brian E. Nelson emphasized that the action targets Kaspersky’s leadership to uphold cybersecurity integrity and protect citizens from cyber threats. The sanctioned individuals include board members such as Andrei Anatolyevich Efremov, who also serves as Chief Business Development Officer, and Igor Gennadyevich Chekunov, who holds the position of Chief Legal Officer. Other sanctioned figures include Marina Mikhaylovna Alekseev, Global Human Resources Chief, Denis Vladimirovich Zenkin, Head of Communications, and Anton Mikhaylovich Ivanov, Chief Technology Officer, among others.

It’s notable that these sanctions specifically target executives but do not extend to Kaspersky itself, its parent or subsidiary companies, nor to Eugene Kaspersky, the company’s founder and CEO. The reasons for excluding Eugene Kaspersky from the sanctions have not been officially clarified by the Treasury or Kaspersky representatives.

Both the Treasury spokesperson and a Kaspersky spokesperson declined to comment immediately on inquiries regarding Eugene Kaspersky’s exclusion from the sanctions.
