WhatsApp Initiates Trials for Web Interface Status Updates and Companion Device Sharing

WhatsApp is expanding its capabilities by enabling users to share status updates from certain linked devices, as outlined by a feature tracker. This upcoming functionality from the Meta-owned messaging service will permit users to publish status updates not only from the web version but also from associated ‘companion’ devices. Those who are part of the beta testing program for WhatsApp Web and WhatsApp for Android can currently explore this feature on their secondary devices. With WhatsApp’s companion mode, users gain access to their chats across four additional devices, even when their primary smartphone is offline.

The latest WhatsApp Web beta version 2.2353.59, following an update, showcases a new feature spotted by feature tracker WABetaInfo within the web client. This enhancement empowers beta testers to post updates directly from the Status section. Users in the beta program will find a green icon adjacent to their profile photo in the My Status section, allowing them to upload status updates by selecting either Photos & Videos or Text.

The capability to share status updates is undergoing expansion to companion devices, as reported by WABetaInfo. Users who have updated to WhatsApp beta for Android 2.24.1.4 will soon have the option to post a status update directly from their companion device. Currently, linked devices facilitate conversations with contacts; however, WhatsApp appears to be gradually broadening the functionalities accessible on these additional devices.

There hasn’t been any specific announcement regarding the wide release of this feature to all users. Moreover, the feature is anticipated to be introduced on iOS companion devices in the near future.

In a recent development, the messaging platform initiated trials for a distinct type of companion device — WhatsApp for iPad. Beta testers, enlisted in the TestFlight program, now have the opportunity to install WhatsApp on Apple’s tablets. Notably, the WhatsApp beta programs for both Android and iOS are currently at full capacity, preventing additional users from signing up for WhatsApp beta updates.
