Tencent Says AI Chip Stockpiles Shield It from U.S. Curbs as Q1 Revenue Beats Forecasts

Tencent Holdings reported a strong 13% year-on-year revenue increase in the first quarter of 2024, reaching 180 billion yuan ($24.97 billion) and beating analysts’ expectations. The gains were largely fueled by growth in domestic and international gaming, AI-powered advertising, and financial technology services.

Despite ongoing U.S. restrictions on advanced chip exports, Tencent President Martin Lau downplayed the impact, stating that the company had previously stockpiled AI chips, enabling it to maintain momentum in its artificial intelligence development plans.

The good thing is that we have a strong stockpile of chips… useful for executing our AI strategy,” Lau said during the earnings call.

While Nvidia’s H20 chip and other high-end processors have been barred from sale to Chinese firms under U.S. export restrictions, Tencent noted that alternative chips are available domestically, and its software advancements would help optimize chip usage.

Key Financial Highlights (Q1 2024):

  • Revenue: 180 billion yuan (vs. 174.6B expected, LSEG)

  • Net profit: 47.8 billion yuan (below 52.2B analyst estimate)

  • Domestic gaming revenue: Up 24% to 42.9B yuan

  • International gaming revenue: Up 23% to 16.6B yuan

  • Marketing services revenue: Up 22% to 17.7B yuan

  • FinTech & Business Services revenue: Up 16% to 27.6B yuan

AI and Strategic Investments

Tencent reaffirmed its commitment to AI development, planning to allocate a low double-digit percentage of 2025 revenue to capital expenditure, primarily targeting AI infrastructure. The company continues to evolve its proprietary large language model Hunyuan, and recently released a public-facing version named T1.

Tencent has also emerged as a collaborative leader among Chinese tech giants, integrating AI models from DeepSeek, an emerging firm known for developing competitive, cost-efficient alternatives to Western AI systems.

Broader Implications

The company’s performance illustrates Tencent’s resilience in the face of geopolitical tech tensions, while demonstrating the commercial viability of China’s AI ecosystemeven under hardware constraints. Its diverse revenue base, spanning gaming, advertising, and financial services, is increasingly supported by AI innovation, keeping Tencent at the forefront of China’s digital economy.

Meta to Require AI Disclosure for Political Ads Ahead of Canadian Elections

Meta Platforms (META.O) announced on Thursday that it will require advertisers to disclose the use of AI or other digital techniques in political or social issue ads ahead of Canada’s federal elections. This move aims to combat misinformation and increase transparency in the political advertising landscape.

The new disclosure rule will apply to ads featuring photorealistic images, videos, or realistic-sounding audio that have been digitally altered to show a real person saying or doing something they did not actually say or do. It will also apply to ads showcasing non-existent individuals or fabricated events, altered footage of real events, or misleading depictions of events that may not be accurate.

In November 2023, Meta extended its ban on new political ads following the U.S. election to combat misinformation. The company also prohibited political campaigns and advertisers in regulated sectors from using its generative AI advertising tools. Despite these efforts, Meta had a setback earlier this year when it scrapped its U.S. fact-checking programs amid pressure from conservatives to overhaul its approach to political content.

Additionally, Meta has introduced a feature allowing users to disclose when they share AI-generated content, enabling the platform to label such media accordingly.

Pinterest Shares Surge on Strong AI Ad Forecasts

Pinterest’s stock soared by 20% on Friday after the company raised its first-quarter revenue forecast, indicating that its AI-driven advertisement tools will boost ad spending on the platform. The surge was driven by Pinterest’s prediction of revenue exceeding expectations, with a focus on its direct response ads, which encourage actions like app downloads or website visits.

CEO Bill Ready highlighted the success of Pinterest’s AI tools, particularly the Performance+ suite, which automates ad targeting and reduces the inputs required for campaign creation. This has been especially helpful for smaller advertisers. “Advertisers using these tools now need 50% fewer inputs to create a campaign,” Ready explained.

Bernstein analyst Mark Shmulik noted that automating the ad creation process makes Pinterest an appealing choice for advertisers, particularly smaller ones, due to the ease it offers. Shmulik also expressed confidence that Pinterest’s progress is sustainable.

In the fourth quarter, Pinterest reported record revenue, driven by strong ad spending from the retail, technology, and financial services sectors. However, advertising spend from food and beverage companies remained weak. Following the positive earnings report, at least 27 brokerages raised their price target for Pinterest.

The company’s first-quarter revenue projection of $837 million to $852 million exceeds analysts’ consensus estimate of $832.8 million. Additionally, its adjusted core earnings forecast of $155 million to $170 million also surpassed expectations.

Pinterest’s stock value could increase by over $4 billion if the gains hold, with the company’s market valuation currently sitting at $22.70 billion. Despite volatility in stock price following earnings reports, Pinterest’s outlook remains positive, with its first-quarter projections further fueling investor optimism.
