OpenAI Launches Open-Weight Reasoning Models Optimized for Laptop Use

OpenAI announced on Tuesday the release of two open-weight language models designed for advanced reasoning tasks and optimized to run efficiently on laptops, delivering performance comparable to its smaller proprietary reasoning models. Unlike fully open-source models, open-weight models provide publicly accessible trained parameters (weights) but do not include full source code or training data, allowing developers to run and fine-tune them locally or behind their own firewalls.

OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman highlighted that the ability to operate these models locally offers users greater control over security and infrastructure. The two models, gpt-oss-120b and gpt-oss-20b, differ in size: the larger model runs on a single GPU, while the smaller one can run directly on personal computers. Both excel at coding, competitive mathematics, and health-related questions, having been trained on text-focused datasets with an emphasis on science and math.

Separately, Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced that OpenAI’s open-weight models are now available on its Bedrock generative AI marketplace—a first for OpenAI on the platform. Bedrock director Atul Deo praised the models as strong open-weight options for AWS customers.

This launch marks OpenAI’s first release of open models since GPT-2 in 2019, entering a competitive landscape that includes Meta’s Llama series and China’s DeepSeek-R1, both of which have influenced open-weight and open-source AI development trajectories this year.

OpenAI, backed by Microsoft and valued at around $300 billion, is currently seeking to raise up to $40 billion in a funding round led by Softbank Group.

Russia’s Sberbank to Launch Advanced Reasoning Large Language Model

Russia’s largest bank, Sberbank, is preparing to release an upgraded version of its large language model (LLM) called GigaChat, which will feature reasoning capabilities capable of scientific research and solving complex problems, according to First Deputy CEO Alexander Vedyakhin. He revealed that he is currently testing the beta version of this new model.

The enhanced GigaChat aims to handle sophisticated tasks in areas such as science, coding, and mathematics, similar to advanced LLMs launched by global leaders like OpenAI. Despite trailing U.S. and Chinese AI developers by six to nine months, Sberbank’s use of domestic cloud infrastructure and localized language adaptation makes GigaChat especially attractive to Russian corporate users.

Currently, about 15,000 Russian companies employ Sberbank’s GigaChat. Meanwhile, Yandex, a key domestic AI competitor, recently announced reasoning capabilities in its search engine, highlighting the competitive AI landscape in Russia.

Alibaba’s AI Reasoning Model Drives Shares Higher

Alibaba Group’s Hong Kong-listed shares surged by more than 8% on Thursday following the release of its new artificial intelligence (AI) reasoning model, QwQ-32B. The company claims that the model, with 32 billion parameters, delivers performance comparable to global AI hits like DeepSeek’s R1, which has 671 billion parameters.

The announcement was made through Alibaba’s AI unit on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, where the company highlighted the QwQ-32B’s abilities in areas such as mathematical reasoning, coding, and general problem-solving. The model was put to the test in benchmark evaluations, performing on par with top AI models like OpenAI’s o1 mini and DeepSeek’s R1.

Alibaba’s new model is accessible via its chatbot service, Qwen Chat, where users can choose from a variety of Qwen models, including the powerful Qwen2.5-Max. The launch comes at a time when the Chinese government is increasing its support for industries, including artificial intelligence, humanoid robots, and 6G telecom.

DeepSeek, which has emerged as a key player in China’s AI landscape, continues to compete with global AI giants like OpenAI, offering models that rival the performance of more expensive alternatives with fewer computing resources.

In addition to Alibaba’s advancements, another AI release attracting attention was the introduction of Manus, an AI agent developed by the Chinese startup Monica. Manus, which outperformed OpenAI’s Deep Research in benchmarks for AI assistants, can help users with tasks such as travel planning and insurance comparisons. Currently by invitation only, a video showcasing Manus has gained significant interest, with over 280,000 views as of Thursday.
