Google Lens Update Brings Instant Camera Viewfinder Access: Report

Google Lens has reportedly introduced a new update that streamlines its interface, offering a more direct approach to using its camera functionality. Previously, users needed to go through a two-step process to access the camera viewfinder after launching the app. This involved opening a preview screen and then tapping the area with the viewfinder to activate the camera. The latest update eliminates this additional step by automatically launching the camera viewfinder upon opening the app. This change reflects Google’s efforts to enhance user experience by simplifying interactions within its applications.

The update comes shortly after reports surfaced about Google’s ongoing efforts to redesign several of its apps, including a recent overhaul of its “Circle to Search” feature for better usability. According to a report by 9to5Google, the improved functionality was observed in Google Lens version 16.0.7 on Android and the latest iteration on iOS. However, the update appears to be in its early rollout phase, as it has yet to be widely available. For instance, Gadgets 360 staff members noted that the feature was not active on their devices at the time of testing.

Currently, the Google Lens app features a full-screen split interface upon launch. The upper portion of the screen displays a preview viewfinder, showing the live feed from the camera through a translucent overlay. Meanwhile, the bottom two-thirds of the interface provides access to the local gallery, showcasing the six most recent images from the device. This layout is designed to offer users quick access to both real-time camera-based searches and previously captured images.

By streamlining access to the camera, Google Lens aims to make real-time image recognition faster and more intuitive for its users. This update is likely to appeal to individuals who rely on the app for tasks like text translation, object identification, and barcode scanning. While the feature is still in its limited release phase, its broader rollout is expected to improve accessibility and usability across Android and iOS devices. As Google continues to refine its suite of tools, such updates highlight the company’s commitment to optimizing user interfaces for seamless functionality.

Gmail Starts Rolling Out Gemini AI ‘Insert’ Button for Android Users

Gmail for Android is set to introduce a long-awaited feature with the rollout of the ‘Insert’ button for the Gemini assistant. This AI-driven feature has been available on the web version of Gmail since last year, but until now, it has been absent from the Android app. According to recent reports, the ‘Insert’ button is finally being made available to all Android users. This addition comes shortly after the integration of Google Calendar support into the Gemini assistant in Gmail in November 2024, further enhancing the AI’s capabilities within Gmail.

However, access to the new ‘Insert’ button feature will require users to subscribe to Gemini Advanced. Previously, users who had access to Gemini on Gmail for Android could generate AI-generated email replies, but the process was far from seamless. The AI-generated responses had to be manually copied from the Gemini interface and pasted into the email draft, or users had to retype the reply themselves. This cumbersome process limited the overall usability of the feature, making it less efficient for many users.

In contrast, the web version of Gmail had already integrated the ‘Insert’ button, allowing users to directly insert AI-generated replies into their email drafts. This improvement streamlined the process, making it much more convenient. Now, with the rollout of the ‘Insert’ button on Gmail for Android, users will be able to replicate this seamless experience on their mobile devices. The feature is being made available with Gmail for Android version 2025.01.05.715468168.

With this update, Gmail for Android users will be able to take full advantage of the Gemini assistant’s AI features, enhancing their productivity and email management. The ‘Insert’ button will save time by eliminating the need for manual copying and pasting, offering a more efficient and user-friendly experience. As the feature is still tied to the Gemini Advanced subscription, it remains a premium tool for users who wish to leverage advanced AI functionalities in their daily communications.

WhatsApp for Android Allegedly Developing New Widget for Meta AI Integration

WhatsApp for Android is reportedly working on a new widget designed to provide users with quick access to Meta AI, the company’s in-house artificial intelligence chatbot. According to a feature tracker, this new widget will allow users to interact with Meta AI directly from their home screen, offering a more convenient and seamless way to access the chatbot. Meta AI was first introduced to WhatsApp in 2024, initially rolled out in select regions, and provides a native method for users to engage with Meta’s AI technology. The widget, which is still under development, is not yet available for beta testers to try out.

A screenshot shared in the report reveals that the new widget will be a 4 x 1-sized element, similar to the Google Search widget commonly found on Android devices. It features a light grey background with a white text field, accompanied by a camera icon. This minimalist design makes it easy for users to interact with Meta AI while keeping their home screens uncluttered. The text box includes the ring-shaped Meta AI logo, along with the prompt “Ask Meta AI,” prompting users to engage with the chatbot right from the home screen.

Upon tapping the text field, users will be able to type in a question or prompt, and once sent, WhatsApp’s full-screen interface will open to the Meta AI chat, where users can read the chatbot’s response. However, according to the feature tracker, the widget will not display the chatbot’s replies directly within the widget itself. Instead, users will need to open the full interface to read the response, allowing them to maintain a streamlined experience while still accessing the chatbot’s capabilities.

The addition of this new widget would further integrate Meta AI into WhatsApp, making it more accessible to users who wish to leverage artificial intelligence for everyday tasks and inquiries. This move also highlights Meta’s ongoing efforts to enhance its messaging platform with AI-powered features, positioning WhatsApp as a more versatile tool in the world of instant messaging. As the widget continues to be developed, it could represent an exciting new feature for WhatsApp users, offering them an innovative way to interact with AI technology.
