AI Startup Modular Raises $250 Million to Take On Nvidia’s Software Dominance

AI startup Modular announced Wednesday it has raised $250 million in fresh funding, giving the company a valuation of $1.6 billion as it looks to loosen Nvidia’s grip on the AI computing ecosystem.

The round, which nearly tripled Modular’s valuation from two years ago, was led by the U.S. Innovative Technology Fund with participation from DFJ Growth and existing backers GV, General Catalyst, and Greylock.

Founded in 2022 by former Apple and Google engineers, Modular has built a platform that lets developers run AI applications across multiple types of chips without rewriting code for each one. Its clients include cloud providers such as Oracle and Amazon, as well as chipmakers Nvidia and AMD.

Nvidia’s dominance—holding more than 80% of the high-end AI chip market—is reinforced by its proprietary CUDA software, which locks in over 4 million developers worldwide. Modular positions itself as a neutral alternative, branding its approach the “Switzerland strategy.”

Co-founder and CEO Chris Lattner emphasized that Modular isn’t aiming to topple Nvidia directly. “What we’re focused on is not like pushing down Nvidia or crushing them. It’s more about enabling a level playing field so that other people can compete,” he said.

The company plans to sell its software directly to enterprises on a usage-based model and through revenue-sharing deals with cloud providers. Investors are betting that a multi-vendor AI hardware future is inevitable. DFJ Growth partner Sam Fort described Modular as “VMware for the AI era,” enabling workloads to move seamlessly across different chip vendors.

With around 130 employees, Modular plans to use the new capital to grow its engineering and sales teams and to expand beyond AI inference into the more demanding AI training market.

AMD Unveils AI Server and Chips as OpenAI Joins Development Effort

AMD CEO Lisa Su introduced a major new line of AI hardware on Thursday, unveiling both the MI350 and MI400 series of AI chips and announcing plans to release the company’s first AI server, called “Helios,” in 2026. The launch signals AMD’s most direct challenge yet to Nvidia’s dominance in the AI server and chip market.

The announcement was made at AMD’s “Advancing AI” developer conference in San Jose, California. The Helios servers will house 72 MI400 chips, designed to compete directly with Nvidia’s current NVL72 servers powered by its Blackwell processors. In a notable difference from Nvidia’s closed ecosystem, Su emphasized that many aspects of AMD’s server and networking standards would be openly available to the broader industry, including rivals like Intel.

“The future of AI is not going to be built by any one company or in a closed ecosystem. It’s going to be shaped by open collaboration across the industry,” Su stated.

Su was joined on stage by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, who confirmed that OpenAI is already working with AMD on its MI450 chips to help optimize them for AI workloads. Altman remarked on OpenAI’s rapid infrastructure growth, calling the pace “crazy” and noting continued expansion with AMD’s hardware.

Executives from Meta Platforms, Elon Musk’s xAI, and Oracle also appeared during the event to showcase how their companies are adopting AMD’s processors. Additionally, Crusoe, a cloud provider specializing in AI, disclosed plans to purchase $400 million worth of AMD’s new chips.

Despite the announcement, AMD shares slipped 2.2%, with analysts suggesting the company still faces significant headwinds in dislodging Nvidia’s dominant market position. Summit Insights analyst Kinngai Chan noted that the newly announced products are unlikely to shift the competitive balance immediately.

AMD has aggressively expanded its AI capabilities over the past year, completing its acquisition of server manufacturer ZT Systems in March and making 25 strategic investments in AI-related startups. The company recently hired engineers from Untether AI and Lamini, further strengthening its chip design and software development teams.

However, AMD’s ROCm software stack continues to lag behind Nvidia’s highly entrenched CUDA platform, which many in the industry see as a major factor behind Nvidia’s dominance.

Nevertheless, AMD remains optimistic about its growth prospects, even as U.S. export controls tighten on AI chip sales to China. When reporting earnings in May, Su reiterated expectations for strong double-digit growth in AI chip sales despite these headwinds.

AMD Shares Drop as CEO Forecasts Declining Data Center Sales Amid AI Competition

Shares of Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) plunged around 10% in after-hours trading on Tuesday after the chipmaker provided a disappointing forecast for its data center sales, particularly in the AI market. Despite exceeding quarterly revenue expectations, AMD’s outlook for 2024 failed to reassure investors, who have been anticipating the company’s larger push into AI, an area dominated by Nvidia.

AMD reported fourth-quarter data center revenue of $3.9 billion, missing the analyst consensus estimate of $4.15 billion. This segment is considered a key indicator of AMD’s AI revenue, as it includes sales of processors that compete with Nvidia’s chips. For 2024, the company reported generating over $5 billion in AI chip revenue but projected a 7% decline in data center sales for the current quarter. AMD’s CEO, Lisa Su, did not provide specific projections for AI chip sales but expressed confidence in achieving “tens of billions” in revenue over the coming years.

However, analysts, such as Kinngai Chan from Summit Insight, suggested that AMD’s AI GPU performance was not meeting market expectations. Meanwhile, Nvidia continues to lead the AI chip market with an 80% share, bolstered by its proprietary CUDA software, which remains a significant barrier for AMD to overcome. Competitors like Microsoft and Meta have also been developing their own custom AI chips, further intensifying the competitive landscape.

Despite these challenges, AMD is focusing on collaborations with its customers to create custom AI chips, aiming to close the gap with companies like Marvell and Broadcom. AMD remains optimistic about increasing sales of personal computer chips, as demand for PCs capable of handling generative AI tasks shows signs of recovery after a prolonged slump.

AMD’s forecasted first-quarter revenue of approximately $7.1 billion, slightly above analyst estimates, provided some relief, but the company’s position in the highly competitive AI chip market remains a point of concern for investors.
