Tencent Says AI Chip Stockpiles Shield It from U.S. Curbs as Q1 Revenue Beats Forecasts

Tencent Holdings reported a strong 13% year-on-year revenue increase in the first quarter of 2024, reaching 180 billion yuan ($24.97 billion) and beating analysts’ expectations. The gains were largely fueled by growth in domestic and international gaming, AI-powered advertising, and financial technology services.

Despite ongoing U.S. restrictions on advanced chip exports, Tencent President Martin Lau downplayed the impact, stating that the company had previously stockpiled AI chips, enabling it to maintain momentum in its artificial intelligence development plans.

The good thing is that we have a strong stockpile of chips… useful for executing our AI strategy,” Lau said during the earnings call.

While Nvidia’s H20 chip and other high-end processors have been barred from sale to Chinese firms under U.S. export restrictions, Tencent noted that alternative chips are available domestically, and its software advancements would help optimize chip usage.

Tencent has also emerged as a collaborative leader among Chinese tech giants, integrating AI models from DeepSeek, an emerging firm known for developing competitive, cost-efficient alternatives to Western AI systems.

MediaTek Prepares for Potential US Tariffs Amid Uncertainty

MediaTek, Taiwan’s leading chip design firm, has been running simulations in anticipation of potential U.S. tariffs on Taiwanese goods, according to CEO Rick Tsai. Despite the uncertainty surrounding this issue, Tsai expressed confidence that the impact would be “manageable” in 2025.

Taiwan’s tech industry, including giants like TSMC, faces the risk of tariffs as U.S. President Donald Trump has proposed such measures to incentivize semiconductor production within the United States. On the campaign trail, Trump criticized Taiwan for allegedly taking U.S. semiconductor business.

Trump has outlined plans to impose tariffs on imported chips, as well as other products such as pharmaceuticals and steel, though no specific timeline has been set. When asked about the potential effects on MediaTek, Tsai referred to the situation as “very unpredictable,” but assured that the company is taking proactive measures, such as simulations, to prepare for the possible changes.

Although Tsai acknowledged the unpredictability of the situation, he believes the impact of any tariffs in the short term will be manageable, especially for 2025. “There are so many variables, so it’s very difficult to give an accurate estimate now,” he said.

In addition to trade concerns, MediaTek is facing pressure from the rise of DeepSeek, a Chinese AI startup whose lower-cost models are posing a challenge to Western tech investments in chipmakers and data centers. Despite this, Tsai remains optimistic about the AI market, noting that the spread of AI will benefit average users.

MediaTek’s shares have outperformed the broader market in 2025, showing a 7.8% gain so far, while the overall market has gained only 1.9%. However, the company’s shares closed flat on Friday.

Chinese State-Linked Accounts Promoted DeepSeek AI Before U.S. Tech Stock Decline, Report Says

A new report by online analysis firm Graphika reveals that Chinese state-affiliated social media accounts actively promoted the launch of DeepSeek AI ahead of a sharp decline in U.S. technology stocks. These accounts, including those of Chinese diplomats, embassies, and state media, amplified narratives celebrating DeepSeek’s advancements, portraying them as a challenge to U.S. dominance in artificial intelligence.

The promotional efforts appeared on platforms such as X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, Instagram, as well as Chinese services like Weibo and Toutiao. According to Graphika, this coordinated activity is part of China’s broader strategy to shape online narratives and highlight Beijing’s progress in key technological fields.

Graphika also linked DeepSeek-related content to previously identified Chinese influence campaigns, including the Shadow Play operation, which has spread pro-China and anti-Western messaging across YouTube and other platforms. The report found a small spike in discussions about DeepSeek’s AI model on X immediately after its January 20 launch, followed by a significant surge over the weekend.

By Monday, DeepSeek’s AI assistant had surpassed OpenAI’s ChatGPT in Apple App Store downloads, coinciding with a sell-off in U.S. tech stocks that erased $593 billion from Nvidia’s market value in a single day—the largest loss in Wall Street history.

The U.S. government has raised concerns over DeepSeek’s access to restricted AI chips. The Commerce Department is currently investigating whether the company has used unauthorized U.S. technology, amid allegations—so far unproven—that it improperly accessed advancements from OpenAI and other industry leaders.
