Nvidia’s Earnings Could Trigger Unprecedented $300 Billion Swing in Shares, Options Indicate

Traders in the U.S. equity options market are bracing for an extraordinary move in Nvidia’s (NVDA) stock following its upcoming earnings report, with expectations pointing to a potential $300 billion swing in market value. The anticipated volatility reflects a projected 9.8% shift in Nvidia’s share price, based on options pricing data from ORATS. This forecast exceeds the expected move for any Nvidia earnings report over the past three years and significantly surpasses the stock’s historical average post-earnings fluctuation of 8.1%.

With Nvidia’s current market capitalization at approximately $3.11 trillion, a 9.8% change equates to roughly $305 billion. This potential swing is set to be the largest expected earnings move ever recorded for a publicly traded company, dwarfing the market caps of about 95% of the S&P 500 companies, including Netflix and Merck.

Nvidia, renowned for its leading role in artificial intelligence (AI) chip manufacturing, has become a pivotal player in the broader market. The company’s stock has surged around 150% year-to-date, contributing significantly to the S&P 500’s 18% gain for the same period. “It’s the Atlas holding up the market,” noted Steve Sosnick, chief strategist at Interactive Brokers, highlighting Nvidia’s influence on overall market profitability.

Options data reveals a greater focus on potential upside rather than downside risks, with traders assigning a 7% probability to a rise of more than 20% and only a 4% chance to a drop exceeding 20%. This asymmetry underscores a prevailing “fear of missing out” (FOMO) among investors, who are keen to capitalize on any potential rally.

The heightened expectations are also attributed to Nvidia’s historical volatility. The company’s average 30-day historical volatility this year is about twice that of other companies with market caps above $1 trillion. This reflects both the stock’s erratic past performance and its status as a highly followed asset among institutional and retail investors.

Christopher Jacobson of Susquehanna Financial Group noted that the options pricing mirrors Nvidia’s actual stock movements, driven by ongoing uncertainty and optimism surrounding the AI sector. As Nvidia continues to shape the future of AI and cloud computing, its earnings report is poised to make a monumental impact on its market value and broader investor sentiment.

Wall Street Rallies as Jobs Data Eases Economic Slowdown Fears

Wall Street’s major indexes surged nearly 2% on Thursday, fueled by a stronger-than-expected jobs report that alleviated concerns about a looming economic slowdown. The data revealed a sharper-than-anticipated drop in new unemployment benefit applications last week, dispelling fears that the labor market was unraveling.

This positive shift in sentiment helped stabilize megacap and growth stocks, which had been in free fall following a disappointing July jobs report that had sparked recession concerns. Nvidia led the gains with a 4.4% surge. According to Skyler Weinand, Chief Investment Officer at Regan Capital, “Just because the labor market is cooling off doesn’t mean we’re entering into a recession.”

All major S&P sectors saw gains, with information technology and communication services leading the charge. Global markets also began to recover from the earlier week’s volatility, triggered by concerns over interest rate hikes and weak demand in the U.S. Treasury market.

J.P. Morgan raised the likelihood of a U.S. recession by the end of the year to 35%, up from 25%, citing reduced pressure in the labor market.

By late morning, the Dow Jones Industrial Average had risen 589.53 points (1.52%) to 39,352.98, the S&P 500 gained 99.37 points (1.91%) to 5,298.87, and the Nasdaq Composite climbed 360.42 points (2.23%) to 16,556.23.

On the earnings front, Eli Lilly jumped 7.9% after raising its annual profit forecast, driven by the success of its weight-loss drug Zepbound, which surpassed $1 billion in quarterly sales. Under Armour surged 19.2% following a surprising first-quarter profit. Conversely, Bumble saw its shares plummet 32.6% after slashing its annual revenue growth forecast, while Warner Bros Discovery and Monster Beverage also faced significant declines.

Investors are now looking ahead to comments from Richmond Fed President Thomas Barkin for insights into the Federal Reserve’s next moves.

Shopify Shares Surge 22% on Strong Earnings and Positive Forecast

Shopify’s stock surged up to 22% in early trading on Wednesday after the company reported stronger-than-expected second-quarter earnings, despite a mixed consumer spending environment. The Canadian e-commerce giant’s performance exceeded Wall Street predictions, showcasing resilience amid economic uncertainty.

For the second quarter, Shopify reported earnings per share of 26 cents, surpassing the anticipated 20 cents, and revenue of $2.05 billion, beating expectations of $2.01 billion. The company’s gross merchandise volume (GMV) reached $67.2 billion, a 22% increase from the previous year and exceeding the consensus estimate of $65.8 billion.

Shopify, which offers e-commerce software, advertising, and payment processing tools, highlighted strong demand and its ability to capture market share despite the challenging economic backdrop. CFO Jeff Hoffmeister noted that the company is thriving even as consumers remain cautious and opt for cheaper alternatives.

The performance stands in contrast to recent earnings reports from rivals like Amazon, Etsy, and Wayfair, which have indicated a more cautious consumer spending trend. Shopify executives attribute their success to the diverse range of businesses using their platform, with President Harley Finkelstein emphasizing that their broad merchant base contributes to their robust performance.

Looking ahead, Shopify anticipates a revenue growth rate in the low-to-mid-20s percentage range for the third quarter, aligning with analysts’ expectations of a 21% increase to $2.07 billion.
