UK Announces £1 Billion Deal for AESC EV Battery Gigafactory in Sunderland

The UK government on Friday unveiled a £1 billion ($1.33 billion) funding agreement to support the construction of a major AESC gigafactory in Sunderland, a move aimed at significantly scaling up the country’s electric vehicle (EV) battery production capacity.

The facility, to be built by Japanese battery maker AESC, will supply enough batteries for up to 100,000 EVs per year, marking a six-fold increase over current output. The project is expected to play a key role in accelerating Britain’s transition to greener transportation and boosting domestic manufacturing.

This investment in Sunderland will not only further innovation and accelerate our move to more sustainable transport, but it will also deliver much-needed high quality, well-paid jobs,” said Finance Minister Rachel Reeves in a government statement.

The gigafactory will be located near Nissan’s car manufacturing site, the largest in the UK. Nissan previously committed in 2023 to building electric versions of two of its car models at the Sunderland plant — a signal of deepening EV production in the region.

Funding Breakdown:

  • £680 million in financing unlocked via financial guarantees from the National Wealth Fund and UK Export Finance.

  • Backed by major banks including Standard Chartered, HSBC, SMBC Group, Société Générale, and BBVA.

  • The remaining £320 million will come from private sector financing and new equity provided by AESC itself.

AESC CEO Shoichi Matsumoto welcomed the announcement, stating:

This investment marks a key milestone in AESC’s ongoing efforts to support the UK’s path towards decarbonisation and the expansion of its EV market.”

The Sunderland gigafactory is part of Britain’s broader strategy to reshore critical EV supply chains, reduce reliance on overseas battery imports, and solidify the country’s position in the fast-growing global EV economy.

Panasonic Energy Aims to Cut China Supply for U.S. EV Battery Business Amid Tariff Concerns

Panasonic Energy, a key supplier of electric vehicle (EV) batteries to Tesla and other automakers, has set its top priority to eliminate its reliance on China for U.S.-made batteries, according to a senior executive. Allan Swan, President of Panasonic Energy of North America, told Reuters that adjusting the company’s supply chain is its “No.1 objective” in response to the incoming policies of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, who has pledged to impose significant tariffs on imported goods, including a 60% tariff on Chinese products.

Panasonic Energy, a subsidiary of Japanese electronics giant Panasonic, currently relies on some Chinese suppliers, though Swan emphasized that the company is working towards reducing this dependence. “We do have some Chinese supply, but we don’t have a lot, and we plan to have even less going forward,” Swan stated. The shift is being accelerated by the potential tariffs and is part of Panasonic’s broader strategy to strengthen its American supply chain.

The raw materials used in Panasonic Energy’s U.S.-manufactured batteries primarily come from international suppliers, including those based in Canada. In response to President Trump’s transition team’s recommendation to impose tariffs on battery materials, Panasonic is taking a “three-pronged approach” to modify its supply chain. This includes securing more U.S. suppliers, supporting Japanese and Korean suppliers to set up operations in the U.S., and collaborating with existing suppliers already planning U.S.-based operations.

Swan emphasized that Panasonic Energy’s focus is on building a robust domestic supply chain to meet U.S. production targets. The company operates a factory in Nevada and plans to open another in Kansas later this year. These efforts are part of Panasonic’s broader goal of aligning with U.S. trade policies and increasing local production as the U.S. shifts toward greater protectionism.

Japanese firms, including major automakers like Nissan and Honda, are bracing for the potential impacts of U.S. tariffs, particularly those targeting Mexico, a key low-cost production hub for the American market. Heavy machinery company Komatsu has also voiced concerns about the potential trade disruptions between the U.S. and Canada.

 

Northvolt Moves Toward Longer-Term Bankruptcy Financing

Swedish electric vehicle battery manufacturer Northvolt announced on Friday that it is making progress toward securing additional bankruptcy financing, with plans to finalize the arrangement by late January. Since entering bankruptcy on November 21, the company has engaged with over 100 potential lenders and investors to secure the necessary funds for its restructuring.

Northvolt’s initial bankruptcy loan, a $100-million facility from Swedish truck maker Scania, was meant to help the company through the early stages of its restructuring. However, it was not intended to carry the company through the entirety of the bankruptcy process. The company is now actively evaluating proposals from both strategic and financial investors to provide long-term financing.

At a court hearing in Houston on Friday, Northvolt’s attorney, Jack Luze, confirmed that the company is working on a longer-term financing proposal, which will be presented to U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Alfredo Perez during a court session scheduled for January 28.

Judge Perez approved the bankruptcy loan in full on Friday, after previously allowing the company to access the initial $51 million from the loan. A Northvolt spokesperson expressed satisfaction with the progress, noting the approval of the loan as an important step in the restructuring process.

The company, which has raised over $10 billion in an effort to produce electric vehicle batteries and compete with dominant Chinese manufacturers, remains operational with around 6,600 employees across seven countries. Northvolt is hopeful that its bankruptcy restructuring will allow it to continue business as usual while addressing its financial challenges.
