US considers Robinhood to manage Trump-backed investment accounts for children

The U.S. government is considering selecting Robinhood to help oversee new government-supported investment accounts for children, known as “Trump accounts,” according to a Bloomberg News report citing people familiar with the matter. The program would involve opening accounts for millions of U.S. children and placing Robinhood in a trustee role for the initial rollout.

The report said Robinhood has begun internal preparations in case it is chosen, while other major investment firms such as Fidelity Investments and Vanguard Group have not been approached for the first phase. The U.S. Treasury Department is expected to select up to three firms to serve as initial trustees, with a decision anticipated soon. Neither Robinhood nor the Treasury immediately commented on the report.

The accounts were announced this week by Donald Trump as part of a government-backed initiative aimed at encouraging long-term investing. Under the plan, the U.S. Treasury Department would deposit $1,000 into an investment account for every child born in the United States between 2025 and 2028. Treasury estimates suggest roughly 25 million families could qualify.

The administration projects that, without any additional contributions, the accounts could grow to about $5,800 by the time beneficiaries reach age 18. Trump has also urged U.S. businesses to contribute to the accounts on behalf of employees’ children, potentially increasing long-term returns. The proposal represents a significant expansion of government involvement in retail investing and could elevate the role of fintech platforms in public financial programs.

Fintech Airwallex Buys South Korea’s Paynuri in Asia Expansion

Australia-founded fintech Airwallex has acquired South Korea’s Paynuri, securing key local licences that will allow it to operate directly in the country as it accelerates expansion across Asia.

Airwallex said the deal grants it Paynuri’s Payment Gateway and Prepaid Electronic Payment Instrument licences, along with a Foreign Exchange Business registration. Financial terms were not disclosed. Co-founder and president Lucy Liu said the acquisition removes reliance on third-party intermediaries and enables direct operations in South Korea.

The company plans to launch global business accounts and payment acquiring services in South Korea in 2026, followed later by spend-management products. Airwallex also aims to build a local team of about 20 staff by the end of 2026 across sales, compliance, and product support.

The move follows a December funding round that valued Airwallex at $8 billion, around 30% higher than its previous valuation. General manager for Asia-Pacific Arnold Chan said South Korea’s fast-growing ecommerce and entertainment sectors offer strong opportunities for Korean businesses expanding overseas.

Airwallex reported $1.2 billion in annualised revenue and $266 billion in annualised transaction volume in December, underscoring its rapid global growth.

Stablecoin Firm Rain Valued at $1.95 Billion in $250 Million Fundraise

Stablecoin company Rain said on Friday it raised $250 million in a Series C funding round led by ICONIQ, valuing the firm at $1.95 billion, as investor appetite for crypto-related businesses continues to strengthen.

Stablecoins — cryptocurrencies pegged to assets such as the U.S. dollar — have gained traction among consumers, investors and major financial institutions as digital assets move closer to the financial mainstream. The sector has also benefited from a more accommodating regulatory environment under U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration, encouraging traditional financial firms to explore crypto-based products.

Rain said the latest round brings its total funding to more than $338 million and comes just four months after its previous fundraise. The company added that its valuation has risen more than 17-fold in the past 10 months.

A spokesperson for Rain said the company’s priority is to expand its presence in key licensed markets and deepen its full-stack stablecoin payments platform, including through strategic acquisitions.

Rain provides infrastructure that allows businesses to issue and manage stablecoin-linked payment cards and digital wallets, enabling users to transact anywhere Visa is accepted.

“Stablecoins are quickly becoming the way money moves in the 21st century, but adoption by users worldwide requires cards and apps that just work,” said Rain CEO and co-founder Farooq Malik. He added that Rain’s active card base has grown 30-fold over the past year, while annualized payment volume increased 38%, though the company remains “in the early innings.”

Malik said the new capital will be used to enter additional markets, scale operations and support more enterprise product launches.

Other investors participating in the round included Sapphire Ventures, Dragonfly, Bessemer Venture Partners, Galaxy Ventures, FirstMark, Lightspeed, Norwest and Endeavor Catalyst.
