Apple Reportedly Delays Next iPhone Air Launch Amid Weak Sales

Apple has reportedly decided to delay the next version of its iPhone Air until after fall 2026, according to a report from The Information, citing sources familiar with the matter.

The move comes just a year after Apple introduced the iPhone Air (2025), a thinner and lighter addition to its flagship lineup designed to appeal to consumers seeking a sleek, minimalist form factor. However, analysts say demand for the model has been weaker than expected, raising concerns about the market appetite for design-focused variants that make performance trade-offs.

While praised for its elegant design, the iPhone Air’s smaller battery and pared-down camera system were viewed by some consumers as compromises compared to the iPhone Pro and Pro Max models.

Apple has not commented on the report, and Reuters said it could not independently verify the delay.

In October, Apple announced that the iPhone Air would be available for pre-order in China, following regulatory approval for eSIM-only connectivity, meaning the model is sold without a physical SIM tray.

The delay signals that Apple may be reassessing its strategy for the Air model as global smartphone demand remains under pressure and competition intensifies in China and other key markets.

Apple’s iPhone Sales Lead Chinese Market in May Amid Global Growth, Says Counterpoint Research

Apple’s iPhone sales surged to the number one position in China in May, marking the company’s strongest two-month global sales growth since the COVID-19 pandemic, according to data from Counterpoint Research. The tech giant experienced a 15% year-on-year increase in global iPhone sales during April and May.

This growth was mainly driven by rebounds in Apple’s two largest markets: China and the United States. Counterpoint Research also reported double-digit sales increases in Japan, India, and Middle Eastern markets, further contributing to the positive trend.

Ivan Lam, Senior Analyst at Counterpoint Research, noted that the second-quarter iPhone performance is promising but emphasized that the market dynamics in the U.S. and China remain critical determinants for overall success.

Data from the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology showed that shipments of foreign-branded phones in China rose slightly to 3.52 million units in April, up from 3.50 million the previous year.

Despite the growth, Apple faces intense competition from Chinese domestic smartphone brands. To remain competitive, the company has implemented price cuts, with Chinese e-commerce platforms offering discounts of up to 2,530 yuan (approximately $351) on the latest iPhone 16 models in May.

Apple’s Holiday Quarter Sales Affected by AI Delays and Chinese Competition

Apple is expected to report modest revenue growth for its holiday quarter, with challenges stemming from delayed AI features and heightened competition from Chinese smartphone makers. Analysts predict a slow quarter for the tech giant as its iPhone 16 series, which launched in September, lacked AI features that its competitors, such as Google and Samsung, had already integrated into their devices. While Apple is planning to roll out improved AI capabilities, including updates to Siri, later in the year, these delays have hindered iPhone demand during the crucial holiday-shopping season.

Apple’s struggles with AI were further underscored when the company had to retract a news-summarizing AI tool that was criticized for inaccuracies by media outlets like the BBC. Jane Hepburne Scott, an investment manager at Aegon Asset Management, emphasized that Apple’s slower adoption of AI has contributed to a decline in its competitive standing and loss of market share.

Adding to Apple’s woes is fierce competition from Chinese smartphone manufacturers, particularly Huawei. The company’s global smartphone market share dropped to 23% in the last quarter of 2024, down from nearly 25% the previous year, with an even sharper decline in China, where its share fell by 10 percentage points to 17%. While the Chinese government has been subsidizing domestic smartphone purchases, these incentives primarily target budget-friendly phones, not high-end models like the iPhone.

Despite these challenges, Apple’s services division, which has been growing steadily, is expected to post a 12.9% increase in sales. However, the overall forecast for the quarter remains underwhelming, with analysts expecting just a 3.8% revenue growth for the period, significantly below the 6.1% growth from the September quarter.

Further complicating matters for Apple is the strengthening of the U.S. dollar, which has risen nearly 8% against major currencies, potentially making it harder for Apple to surpass sales expectations in international markets.
