Microsoft Strengthens Data Protection for European Cloud Clients

Microsoft announced on Monday that it will ensure data from its European cloud customers remains within Europe, under the jurisdiction of European law, with operational oversight by local personnel and complete customer control.

This move comes amid growing concerns from European governments and companies over the risk of sensitive data being transferred outside the continent, particularly to the United States. The concerns have intensified calls for stricter data sovereignty, prompting American tech giants like Microsoft to adopt more transparent and compliant data governance policies.

As part of these efforts, Microsoft reaffirmed commitments made in April to strengthen safeguards as it scales its cloud and AI infrastructure in Europe. These include compliance with European legislation aimed at curbing the dominance of major technology platforms.

The company also disclosed that any remote access to systems handling European data by Microsoft engineers will be permitted and actively monitored in real-time by personnel based in Europe. This measure is designed to bolster customer trust and ensure alignment with European data protection standards.

Microsoft’s new sovereign private cloud, which supports these enhanced protections, is currently in preview phase and is expected to become generally available later this year.

Trump to Join AI and Energy Summit in Pittsburgh with Tech and Energy Leaders

U.S. President Donald Trump will attend an artificial intelligence and energy summit in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on July 15, according to an announcement from the office of Pennsylvania U.S. Senator Dave McCormick. The inaugural Pennsylvania Energy and Innovation Summit will take place at Carnegie Mellon University.

The event is expected to gather top executives from both the tech and energy industries. Axios reported that the guest list includes high-profile tech leaders such as OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Meta Platforms CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai. Leading figures from the energy sector such as Exxon Mobil CEO Darren Woods, Shell CEO Wael Sawan, and Chevron CEO Mike Wirth are also expected to attend.

White House AI czar David Sacks is scheduled to participate as well. Earlier this week, Sacks voiced concerns that excessive regulation of artificial intelligence in the U.S. could hinder industry growth and give China a competitive advantage in the global AI market. His comments suggest that the Trump administration may adopt a more expansionist policy for U.S. AI companies, focusing on boosting international markets for American AI chips and models.

This approach contrasts with that of Democratic former President Joe Biden, who emphasized strict controls to prevent U.S. AI chips from being used to strengthen China’s military capabilities.

Meanwhile, a bipartisan group of 40 state attorneys general, including Republicans from Ohio, Tennessee, Arkansas, Utah, and Virginia, have pushed back against federal efforts to limit state-level AI regulations. They argue that states should retain the authority to develop and enforce consumer protection rules for AI technologies.

The Pittsburgh summit signals the increasing intersection of AI policy, energy strategy, and international trade considerations in U.S. political and economic debates as AI continues to reshape multiple sectors.

Temasek Joins Microsoft, BlackRock, MGX in Major AI Infrastructure Investment Consortium

Singapore’s state investment firm Temasek has officially joined the AI Infrastructure Partnership (AIP), a major global consortium backed by Microsoft, BlackRock, and MGX, according to presentation slides shared during BlackRock’s investor day on Thursday. The consortium also includes BlackRock’s Global Infrastructure Partners.

AIP, formed in September, aims to invest over $30 billion initially into building the data centers and energy facilities required to support artificial intelligence applications, such as ChatGPT. The partnership ultimately seeks to mobilize up to $100 billion, including debt financing, with a primary focus on projects within the United States.

Temasek’s involvement comes shortly after the Kuwait Investment Authority became the first non-founding sovereign wealth fund to join the group earlier this month. The consortium’s partners also include key AI players like Nvidia and Elon Musk’s xAI.

Ravi Lambah, Temasek’s head of strategic initiatives, commented on the development: “Temasek’s investment in the AI Infrastructure Partnership reflects our focus on the big shifts and trends of the future. AI is potentially the most transformative and impactful technology for all sectors and businesses.”

The financial terms of Temasek’s investment were not disclosed. As of March 31, 2024, Temasek reported a net portfolio value of S$389 billion (approximately $304 billion), according to its official website.
