Waymo Launches Corporate Robotaxi Accounts to Target Business Travel

Alphabet-owned Waymo announced on Wednesday the launch of “Waymo for Business,” a corporate program that allows companies to set up accounts for employees to use its robotaxi service across Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Francisco, Austin, and Atlanta.

The initiative is aimed at tapping into recurring corporate travel demand, giving employers tools to control when, where, and how staff use autonomous rides. It marks another step in Waymo’s efforts to expand the commercial use of its driverless fleet.

Waymo said it now completes more than 1 million rides per month, with nearly one in six riders in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Phoenix using the service for commuting. The company has recently expanded operations, launching paid driverless rides in Atlanta and broadening coverage in Austin.

Through an administrative portal, organizations can manage employee access, issue promo codes, and generate reports to track ride usage and expenses. Early adopters include Carvana, the Phoenix-based online used-car retailer.

The business service is still in its early stages, but Waymo said more features will be added over time to support companies of various sizes.

A key focus for Waymo is airport access, a priority for frequent business travelers. The company already serves Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport, recently gained approval to operate at San José Mineta International Airport, and holds a testing permit at San Francisco International Airport ahead of possible commercial service.

Zoox Opens Robotaxi Factory, Escalating Rivalry with Tesla and Waymo

Amazon-owned Zoox has officially launched its first robotaxi production facility, signaling a major step toward commercializing its autonomous vehicle service and intensifying competition with industry leaders Tesla and Waymo.

Located in Hayward, California, the new 220,000-square-foot factory is capable of assembling over 10,000 robotaxis per year at full capacity. While Zoox has not disclosed its initial production figures, the move reflects its plans to scale significantly as it prepares for public ride launches.

The company is currently testing its fully autonomous, purpose-built robotaxis — uniquely designed vehicles with no steering wheels or pedals — in multiple U.S. cities. It expects to begin commercial operations in Las Vegas later this year, followed by expansion in San Francisco, where it is already operating in the SoMa (South of Market) neighborhood.

“Anticipated public demand and upcoming market entries justify this scale-up in production,” Zoox stated, hinting at more widespread deployments in the coming years.

Zoox’s entry comes at a pivotal moment in the robotaxi race:

  • Waymo, owned by Alphabet, already runs a mature driverless taxi service and is expanding across U.S. cities.

  • Tesla, led by Elon Musk, plans to launch its paid robotaxi service on June 22, using Model Y SUVs with self-driving software, and later a Cybercab—a futuristic, manual-control-free, two-seater vehicle.

Unlike Waymo’s retrofitted models and Tesla’s modified SUVs, Zoox’s vehicles are custom-built from the ground up, resembling compact “toaster ovens” and designed specifically for autonomous operations.

Still, all major players in the space face substantial hurdles. Regulatory constraints, safety concerns, and cost overruns have hampered progress toward full autonomy. Moreover, companies including Zoox, Tesla, and Waymo have been subject to federal investigations and recalls after incidents involving their autonomous systems.

Nevertheless, Zoox’s new production hub marks a bold bet that it can move from limited testing to mass deployment, turning science fiction into a scalable reality.

Uber Teams Up with Pony AI to Launch Self-Driving Taxis in Middle East Pilot Program

Uber announced on Tuesday a new partnership with China-based autonomous driving company Pony AI, marking its latest move to expand into the robotaxi market. The collaboration will begin with a pilot launch in a key Middle Eastern market later this year, with plans for further international rollout.

During the pilot phase, Pony AI vehicles will operate with onboard safety drivers, with the goal of transitioning to fully autonomous commercial service as regulatory and technical milestones are met.

The deal is part of Uber’s growing portfolio of partnerships aimed at strengthening its foothold in self-driving mobility, as it competes with rivals like Lyft and Tesla. In recent weeks, Uber also announced collaborations with May Mobility and Momenta, and expanded its strategic alliances with WeRide and Alphabet’s Waymo.

Pony AI shares rose nearly 13% in premarket trading following the news, while Uber shares dipped slightly by 1%. Pony AI, which went public on Nasdaq in November, is backed by Toyota and has active robotaxi licenses in major Chinese cities including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen. The company is also exploring expansions into South Korea, Luxembourg, Hong Kong, and other international markets.

As the U.S. government continues to ease certain regulatory barriers for self-driving vehicles—while requiring incident reporting—companies like Uber and Pony AI are accelerating efforts toward large-scale robotaxi deployment.
