Emerging AI Investment Opportunities Beyond Big Tech

The ongoing artificial intelligence (AI) revolution, described as the “biggest platform shift since electricity,” is predicted to create lucrative opportunities for smaller tech firms, according to Clare Pleydell-Bouverie, co-lead fund manager at Liontrust Asset Management.

In an interview with CNBC, Pleydell-Bouverie emphasized that the dominant players of the last tech cycle—referred to as the “Magnificent Seven,” which includes Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, Meta, Microsoft, Nvidia, and Tesla—may not necessarily lead in this new phase of technological transformation. Instead, emerging firms focused on AI applications and infrastructure are poised to become significant players.

“This year, we’ve concentrated on the AI infrastructure layer, which is essential for scaling this technology,” Pleydell-Bouverie stated. She highlighted sectors like silicon chip production, semiconductor equipment manufacturing, and network infrastructure as critical to enabling AI growth. Companies like Broadcom, Amphenol, and Arista Networks are vital in building the foundational layers of AI’s technological stack.

The “stack,” as described by Pleydell-Bouverie, includes several layers:

  1. AI Infrastructure: Firms providing hardware and connectivity, such as chips, cables, and networks.
  2. Foundation Model Providers: Companies creating large-scale machine-learning models, which she characterized as highly competitive and commoditized.
  3. AI Engineering Firms: Those enabling businesses to integrate AI into their operations and services.

While the infrastructure layer currently holds the most value, Pleydell-Bouverie foresees this shifting toward application and integration in the near future.

Nvidia’s Strategic Position in AI
Nvidia remains a standout in the AI space, which Pleydell-Bouverie compares to Apple’s dominance during the smartphone revolution. However, she argues that Nvidia is often misunderstood as merely a chip provider.

“Nvidia is positioning itself as the operating system for the next generation of AI-infused software,” she noted, pointing to the company’s strategic shift toward integrating software and hardware to power AI applications. Nvidia’s shares have surged by over 180% in 2024, fueled by demand for its advanced AI chips like Blackwell.

Pleydell-Bouverie sees Nvidia as the primary beneficiary of the AI boom in 2025, likening its current trajectory to Apple’s rise under Steve Jobs, who combined hardware innovation with software integration to dominate the tech landscape.

As AI continues to redefine industries, investors are encouraged to look beyond traditional Big Tech giants and explore opportunities in emerging firms that are reshaping the AI ecosystem.

Nvidia Unveils DiffUHaul, an AI Tool for Relocating Objects in Images

Nvidia has introduced an innovative artificial intelligence (AI) model called DiffUHaul, designed to relocate objects within images without disrupting the background or altering the image’s structure. This groundbreaking tool is capable of spatially understanding the context of an image, enabling it to move objects from one location to another while maintaining the integrity of the surrounding environment. Unlike many AI tools that require extensive pre-training, DiffUHaul operates in a training-free manner, meaning it doesn’t rely on pre-existing data to function. The tool was showcased at the Special Interest Group on Computer Graphics and Interactive Techniques (SIGGRAPH) Asia 2024 conference, sparking significant interest in the AI community.

Nvidia’s team collaborated with The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Tel Aviv University, and Reichman University to develop this cutting-edge technology. According to the research paper detailing the project, the goal was to address a longstanding challenge in AI image manipulation—relocating objects within an image while preserving spatial awareness. Traditional AI models often struggle with this task because they lack the ability to reason about how a movement in a 2D space would be perceived, particularly when it comes to the surrounding objects and background. DiffUHaul aims to overcome these limitations by incorporating a spatial understanding that allows for seamless object relocation.

One of the key issues that DiffUHaul addresses is a bottleneck in AI image generation. AI models typically excel at generating realistic images, but they have difficulty with tasks that require an understanding of spatial relationships, such as moving objects within an image. For example, if an object is shifted, the AI must consider how the movement will impact the background, lighting, and shadows. Most current visual models fail to account for these complexities, leading to unrealistic or jarring results when objects are relocated. DiffUHaul, however, integrates spatial reasoning directly into its framework, making object relocation much more natural and intuitive.

The introduction of DiffUHaul represents a significant step forward in AI’s ability to handle image manipulation tasks with a greater degree of accuracy and sophistication. By solving the spatial reasoning problem, Nvidia has set the stage for future advancements in AI-driven image editing and generation. This technology could have a wide range of applications, from digital art and design to practical uses in industries such as e-commerce and marketing, where image manipulation is often required to showcase products in various contexts.

OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Sora Services Resume After Hours-Long Outage

OpenAI announced Thursday that its popular ChatGPT assistant, Sora video generator, and developer interface were fully operational again following an hours-long outage. The disruption lasted just over four hours, briefly halting access to some of the company’s widely used services.

This outage comes at a time when ChatGPT continues to expand rapidly. Sam Altman, OpenAI’s CEO, reported earlier in December that the service now reaches 300 million active users weekly. Moreover, Apple recently integrated ChatGPT into its software updates for iPhone, iPad, and Mac, bringing further mainstream exposure to the tool.

The company’s status page confirmed the issue had been resolved after the brief downtime. In June, OpenAI also experienced a similar issue, which lasted over five hours.

OpenAI, which reached a $157 billion valuation following an October funding round involving major investors such as Microsoft and Nvidia, has seen a meteoric rise since the launch of ChatGPT in late 2022. This growth has cemented its position as one of the most talked-about companies in the tech world.

Additionally, OpenAI had announced the release of Sora on Monday to users in the U.S. and other countries. However, Altman admitted on X the following day that the demand for Sora had exceeded expectations, and it would take time before everyone gains access.
