Novo Nordisk Expands AI Partnership with Valo Health for Obesity Drug Development

Novo Nordisk, the Danish pharmaceutical giant, has announced an expansion of its partnership with U.S.-based tech firm Valo Health to develop new treatments for cardiometabolic diseases, including obesity, using human data and artificial intelligence (AI).

The expanded collaboration follows a recent setback for Novo, as its weight-loss drug candidate CagriSema underperformed in trials, falling short of expectations. This comes as Novo seeks to develop a more potent weight-loss treatment to rival Eli Lilly’s Zepbound, a competitor in the obesity drug market. Both companies are also exploring the broader health benefits of their obesity treatments, as they look to expand their utility beyond weight loss. Analysts predict the obesity drug market could be worth $150 billion within the next decade.

Originally announced in September 2023, the partnership between Novo and Valo aimed to develop up to 11 drugs. With the new agreement, the scope has broadened, with plans to discover and develop up to 20 new treatments for obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases.

Under the terms of the expanded deal, Valo Health stands to receive up to $190 million in near-term payments, along with potential milestone payments totaling about $4.6 billion. The original agreement entitled Valo to up to $2.7 billion in milestone payments.

Honeywell and NXP Semiconductors Expand Partnership to Advance Aviation and Autonomous Flying Technology

Honeywell and NXP Semiconductors have announced an expansion of their partnership to develop artificial intelligence-driven technology aimed at revolutionizing aviation and autonomous flying. The collaboration will combine Honeywell’s Anthem avionics system, a cloud-connected cockpit, with NXP’s advanced computing architecture to enhance flight planning and management.

The focus of the partnership will be on adapting NXP’s autonomy technology, initially designed for the automotive industry, to work with Honeywell’s Anthem system. This will be aimed at advancing autonomous flying technology, which has become a central focus in the aviation industry, particularly with the rise of electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft designed for urban travel.

Although the financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, it builds on the two companies’ previous collaboration last year, which centered around Honeywell’s building management systems. Vertical Aerospace, an eVTOL manufacturer, will be utilizing Honeywell’s Anthem system to test its VX4 aircraft, marking a key milestone in the development of autonomous flying technology.

ESR and CloudHQ Partner for $2 Billion Data Centre Campus in Japan

ESR Group, a Hong Kong-based real estate manager, has announced a partnership with U.S.-based data centre provider CloudHQ to co-develop and operate a $2 billion data centre campus in Osaka, Japan. The facility will be built in three phases, with the first phase set to be operational by June 2025, delivering 25 megawatts (MW) of capacity.

This collaboration comes at a time when the growing demand for artificial intelligence (AI) is fueling a global surge in data centre investments, with real estate managers, private equity firms, and global investors racing to meet this demand. The new campus in Nanko Kita, Osaka, is expected to offer a total of 130 MW of data centre capacity upon completion.

ESR views this joint venture as a significant step in its broader strategy to expand and enhance its data centre capabilities. According to Diarmid Massey, CEO of ESR Data Centres, the company remains confident in the long-term growth potential of the data centre market in Japan and across the Asia-Pacific region.
