Activist Investor Starboard Value Takes 9% Stake in Tripadvisor, Shares Jump

Activist investment firm Starboard Value has acquired over a 9% stake in online travel company Tripadvisor, valued at approximately $160 million, sources said Wednesday. The news drove Tripadvisor’s stock price up 7% in after-hours trading.

Tripadvisor, known for its hotel and restaurant review and search tools, has seen its shares fall about 15% over the past year. Earlier this year, Tripadvisor’s board formed a special committee to explore strategic options, including a potential sale.

Starboard Value is known for pushing operational and strategic changes in its target companies but neither Tripadvisor nor Starboard immediately responded to Reuters’ requests for comment. The Wall Street Journal first reported the stake acquisition.

Starboard’s CEO Jeffrey Smith recently joined the board of consumer healthcare company Kenvue and has previously advocated for changes at Pfizer and Autodesk. The firm is expected to file a 13D regulatory disclosure soon, signaling intentions to influence Tripadvisor’s management and operations.

EchoStar Shares Jump 50% After Trump Reportedly Urges FCC Deal

EchoStar’s stock soared as much as 50% on Monday, following a Bloomberg report late Friday that former U.S. President Donald Trump had intervened in talks over the company’s wireless spectrum licenses. Trump reportedly urged EchoStar Chairman Charlie Ergen and Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chair Brendan Carr to reach an agreement over the future of the company’s spectrum holdings.

The report said Trump met with Ergen on Thursday and called Carr, who then joined them at the White House. EchoStar has not commented publicly on the meeting.

The FCC began investigating EchoStar in May over concerns that it had not fulfilled its obligations to deploy 5G services, raising the possibility that its valuable wireless spectrum licenses could be revoked. The company has acknowledged missing about $500 million in interest payments and attributed some of the financial strain to regulatory uncertainty.

The market reacted swiftly to the news, with shares hitting an intraday high of $25.29 on Monday—up from $16.84 at Friday’s close. The surge marked a sharp reversal for EchoStar, whose stock had lost about 30% of its value since the FCC’s probe was disclosed.

Analysts at UBS noted in a Sunday briefing that the new developments could reduce the risk of EchoStar losing its airwaves and may renew interest in its spectrum assets. They cited the potential for partnerships or acquisitions from major wireless players such as T-Mobile US and AT&T, given the current scarcity of available spectrum.

Despite the rally, UBS maintained a “neutral” rating on the stock, citing ongoing regulatory uncertainty until a definitive resolution is reached.

Oracle Shares Hit Record High as AI Cloud Demand Boosts Revenue Outlook

Oracle shares surged 14% on Thursday, crossing the $200 mark for the first time, after the company raised its annual revenue forecast fueled by strong demand for its AI-related cloud services.

Despite ongoing geopolitical tensions and warnings from analysts about potential impacts of U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs on Big Tech’s AI investments, confidence in the software sector remains robust.

Oracle recently announced a joint venture called Stargate aimed at providing large-scale computing power to OpenAI, positioning itself as a key player in AI infrastructure.

Michael Ashley Schulman, partner at Running Point Capital Advisors, described Oracle’s transformation as moving from a “stodgy” image to a “cloud-native mage” competing in a fiercely contested market.

For fiscal 2026, Oracle expects total revenue to reach at least $67 billion, according to CEO Safra Catz during a post-earnings call.

The company reported cloud services quarterly revenue growth of 14% to $11.7 billion, with overall revenue of $15.9 billion surpassing estimates of $15.59 billion. Following these results, at least nine brokerages have raised their price targets.

Oracle’s forward price-to-earnings ratio stands at 25.86, lower than rivals Microsoft’s 31.34 and Amazon’s 31.80. Year-to-date, Microsoft’s stock has risen 12.16%, while Amazon’s has fallen 2.8%.

Analysts at Piper Sandler noted that Oracle is experiencing a wave of enterprise popularity unseen since the internet boom of the late 1990s.

At the close, Oracle shares were trading at $201.38.
