Navy Recruiting Rebounds, But Faces Delays in Boot Camp Training

The U.S. Navy is on track to meet its recruitment goal of 40,600 new sailors by the end of September, thanks to new recruiting programs. However, the Navy will fall short of its target to process all recruits into boot camp by the end of the fiscal year, with a shortfall of about 5,000 sailors.

Vice Adm. Rick Cheeseman acknowledged that while the Navy has successfully signed initial contracts with a significant number of recruits, many will not start their 10-week boot camp training at Great Lakes, Illinois, until later. This delay in processing recruits is partly due to a surge in enlistments towards the end of the year.

The Navy has struggled to meet its recruiting targets for the past two years, impacting its ability to fully staff its warships. Currently, the Navy is short about 22,000 sailors, with a significant deficit in the lower ranks.

Cheeseman emphasized that despite these challenges, the Navy is working to ensure its ships remain operational and capable of their missions. The military has faced difficulties attracting recruits amid a competitive job market where private companies offer higher wages and benefits.

In response to recruiting challenges, the Navy has implemented several changes, including accepting recruits with lower test scores and those without high school diplomas. This approach has expanded the pool of potential recruits but also raised concerns about discipline and performance.

This year, about 17% of Navy recruits are category 4—those with lower Armed Services Qualification Test scores. Although this is higher than the military norm, the Navy has adjusted its standards, recently ceasing to accept those with scores between 10 and 20.

Additionally, the Navy has introduced a Future Sailor Preparatory Course, modeled after a successful Army program. This course offers academic and physical training to prepare recruits who may struggle with initial tests, and has already seen participation from about 2,900 sailors.

Despite the current delays, Cheeseman is optimistic about the Navy’s future recruitment efforts and believes that increased staffing and improved programs will enable the service to meet its targets in the coming year.

General Motors (GM) has announced a delay in the start of production at its new electric vehicle (EV) battery cell plant in New Carlisle, Indiana. The plant, a joint venture with Samsung SDI, is now expected to begin operations in 2027, a delay from the previously anticipated start date of 2026. The delay, which is less than a year, is attributed to current market conditions and the finalization of contract details.

The $3.5 billion factory, located near South Bend on a 680-acre site, is currently under construction and is set to employ 1,600 workers. It will produce nickel-rich prismatic batteries, known for storing more energy and offering improved driving range compared to other battery chemistries.

The slowdown in U.S. EV sales, which saw a 7% increase to 599,134 units in the first half of the year, has influenced the delay. While EV sales account for 7.6% of the U.S. new vehicle market, consumer concerns about range and charging infrastructure have tempered growth. Market leader Tesla Inc. has responded to these conditions by cutting prices, leading other manufacturers to follow suit.

GM and Samsung initially announced their joint venture in June of the previous year. This new plant is a strategic move for Samsung to enter the North American EV market and will also serve other automotive companies with battery cells.

The New Carlisle facility will be GM’s fourth joint venture battery cell factory. The company has existing plants with South Korea’s LG Energy Solution, including operational sites in Warren, Ohio, and Spring Hill, Tennessee, with another under construction in Lansing, Michigan. GM’s shift to Samsung followed several recalls of Chevrolet Bolt EVs due to battery defects from LG, which had caused fire risks.

As the EV market experiences fluctuations, other automakers, including Ford, are also adjusting their production timelines and focus. Ford recently announced a postponement of a large electric pickup truck and the cancellation of a new large electric SUV, opting instead to concentrate on midsize electric pickups, commercial vans, and gas-electric hybrids.

 

Couple in Lamborghini Kidnapped and Assaulted During House Hunting in Connecticut

A couple in their 50s were kidnapped and assaulted in Danbury, Connecticut, while house hunting this past weekend. The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon when a group of six men intentionally rear-ended the couple’s Lamborghini sports car before forcibly abducting them.

The assailants, all residents of Florida, used baseball bats to beat the couple, restrained them with duct tape, and covered the male victim’s eyes. The group then split, with some driving off in the Lamborghini and others fleeing with the victims in a van.

According to Sgt. Steven Castrovinci, “It seems like they were struck with a bat.” He described the male victim as “pretty bruised, pretty swollen,” with injuries resulting from repeated bat strikes.

A witness to the incident alerted law enforcement and pursued the van until it crashed. Police were able to apprehend four of the suspects at the crash site and rescue the kidnapped couple. The remaining two suspects were arrested later.

The victims were transported to the hospital and are reported to be recovering from their injuries, which are not considered life-threatening.

The six suspects—Angel Borrero, 23; Reynaldo Diaz, 22; Anthony Pena, 23; Josue Romero, 26; Ricardo Estrada, 21; and Michael Rivas, 18—face charges including first-degree assault, first-degree kidnapping, and reckless endangerment. The motive behind the attack remains unclear, and no known connection between the victims and suspects has been established.
