Xiaomi Reveals SU7 Electric Car, Sets Ambitious Goal to Rank Among Top 5 Automakers

Committing $10 Billion: Xiaomi’s Ambitious Decade-Long Auto Investment Pledge

On Thursday, Chinese smartphone giant Xiaomi unveiled its inaugural electric vehicle and promptly set an audacious goal: securing a spot among the world’s top five automakers. The sedan, named the SU7, carries considerable anticipation, capitalizing on its integration with the operating system shared by Xiaomi’s acclaimed smartphones.

However, the car’s debut occurs amidst challenges within the world’s largest automotive market, grappling with surplus manufacturing capacity and subdued demand, intensifying a fierce price competition within the industry.

That didn’t stop Xiaomi Chief Executive Lei Jun outlining big ambitions that include building “a dream car comparable to Porsche and Tesla”.

“By working hard over the next 15 to 20 years, we will become one of the world’s top 5 automakers, striving to lift China’s overall automobile industry,” Lei said at the event.

Like several other tech firms, Xiaomi has been seeking to diversify beyond its core business to EVs – a plan it first flagged in 2021.

It has pledged to invest $10 billion (roughly Rs. 83,171 crore) in autos over a decade and is one of the few new players in China’s EV market as authorities have been reluctant to add to the supply glut.

During the launch event held in Beijing, Lei, the CEO of Xiaomi, emphasized the autonomous driving prowess that Xiaomi cars aim to pioneer within the automotive sector. These Xiaomi-branded vehicles are slated for production in a Beijing factory, operated by a subsidiary of the state-owned automaker BAIC Group. The manufacturing plant boasts an annual production capacity of 200,000 vehicles, facilitating the realization of Xiaomi’s automotive ambitions.
