GE Aerospace’s FlightPulse app soars past 60,000 pilots as adoption accelerates

GE Aerospace has seen rapid growth in the use of its FlightPulse app, with more than 60,000 commercial pilots now using the tool — up from 40,000 a year ago — and the number expected to exceed 70,000 by the end of 2025, the company said.

The data-driven flight monitoring app, launched in partnership with Qantas in 2017, allows pilots to review their own flight performance, compare it with peers, and identify ways to improve efficiency and safety. Airlines pay GE a per-pilot licensing fee to access the platform, which has helped strengthen the company’s reputation for aviation safety and sustainability.

Qantas captain Mark Cameron said FlightPulse helps him analyze details such as takeoff and landing angles, crucial for avoiding tail strikes on smaller aircraft like the Airbus A321. The airline also uses aggregated app data to optimize flight operations, cutting fuel costs by encouraging pilots to use less reverse thrust where safe.

According to Andrew Coleman, head of GE Aerospace’s Software-as-a-Service division, FlightPulse is now used by 42 airlines, including Delta Air Lines and NetJets, with fleets ranging from a few hundred to over 15,000 pilots. Coleman said the company aims to reach 100,000 pilots by 2026, emphasizing that the app’s goal is performance improvement — not punitive monitoring.

U.S. Authorities Investigate Amazon Drone Crashes in Arizona

The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) have launched investigations into two Amazon Prime Air delivery drones that crashed after colliding with a crane in Tolleson, Arizona, on Wednesday.

Amazon had started its drone delivery service in the Phoenix metro area’s West Valley in November 2024, allowing customers to receive small packages—up to 5 pounds (2.3 kg)—within an hour. The company paused drone operations in Arizona following the incident but said they would resume flights on Friday.

Amazon spokesperson Terrence Clark stated that the company’s internal review found no technical malfunction in the drones or their supporting systems. He emphasized that “safety is our top priority,” and announced new measures such as enhanced visual landscape inspections to better detect moving obstacles like cranes in future operations.

The accidents come as Amazon continues to push toward its ambitious goal of delivering 500 million packages per year by drone by 2030. The company has been steadily expanding its autonomous delivery network, including a 2023 partnership with Amazon Pharmacy to deliver prescription medications by drone in College Station, Texas.

Broader regulatory shifts are also underway. In August 2025, the U.S. Department of Transportation proposed updated rules allowing drones to fly beyond the visual line of sight of operators—an essential step toward mainstream drone delivery. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy described the initiative as transformative: “It’s going to change the way that people and products move throughout our airspace… You may get your Amazon package—or even your Starbucks coffee—from a drone.”

The Tolleson incident underscores both the promise and complexity of integrating drones into everyday logistics, as regulators and industry leaders race to balance innovation with airspace safety.

Cathay Pacific Grounds A350 Fleet for Engine Inspections After Failure Incident

Cathay Pacific has grounded its entire fleet of Airbus A350 jets following the discovery of an engine component failure on flight CX383 from Hong Kong to Zurich. The airline has canceled 24 flights over two days to address the issue. The failure, identified as a first-of-its-kind problem affecting a fuel nozzle, prompted a comprehensive inspection of its 48 A350 aircraft.

The failure occurred on a Trent XWB-97 engine, produced by Rolls-Royce, which powers the A350. Cathay Pacific is working with Airbus, Rolls-Royce, and regulators to investigate and resolve the issue. Rolls-Royce has expressed its commitment to support the investigation and improve the engine’s reliability.

The incident follows recent issues faced by Boeing, highlighting ongoing challenges in the aviation industry. Boeing has been dealing with a safety crisis related to its 737 Max and delays in its 777X aircraft. The grounding of Cathay Pacific’s A350 fleet is a significant move, reflecting the broader scrutiny and maintenance challenges currently impacting major aircraft manufacturers.
