CD Projekt Launches Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition on Nintendo Switch 2

Poland’s leading game developer CD Projekt announced the release of Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition on Nintendo’s new Switch 2 console, marking the first time the game is available to Nintendo players. The launch comes amid a growing industry trend of relying on back catalogue sales as new game releases face increasing delays.

Since the Phantom Liberty expansion launched in September 2023, CD Projekt has focused more on leveraging its existing game portfolio to drive revenue. Analysts expect the Nintendo Switch 2 launch to significantly boost the company’s financial results in the second quarter and beyond.

Erste Group’s analyst Krzysztof Tkocz highlighted that this release “will have a significant impact on the company’s results in second quarter and subsequent quarters.” Similarly, Trigon DM analyst Grzegorz Balcerski noted the game could become “one of the most popular third-party titles” for the new console’s debut.

Gaming enthusiasts showed strong interest as Nintendo’s Switch 2 launched on Thursday, eager for the next-generation console’s more powerful capabilities. CD Projekt priced Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition at $69.99 for the Switch 2.

CD Projekt Shares Fall After ‘Witcher IV’ Release Delayed Beyond 2026

Shares of CD Projekt (CDR.WA) saw a significant decline of nearly 13% in early trading on Wednesday, following the company’s announcement that the highly anticipated “Witcher IV” would not be released before 2027. The delay has sparked concerns about an even longer wait for the next installment in the beloved Witcher series.

‘Witcher IV’ Release Date Pushed Beyond 2026

CD Projekt confirmed that “Witcher IV,” which is being developed under the code name Polaris, will be the first entry in a new trilogy expanding the Witcher universe. The franchise, which has sold over 75 million copies globally, is known for its medieval fantasy world and critical acclaim. However, the game developer has refrained from giving an exact release date, instead suggesting that the game would premiere after 2026 to provide more clarity for investors.

Analysts React to the Delay

The news that the release of “Witcher IV” will not occur before 2027 was not entirely unexpected, according to analysts. Grzegorz Balcerski from Trigon noted that his previous forecast already anticipated the game’s premiere in the second quarter of 2027. However, the extended timeline has raised concerns about potential further delays, which are common in the video game industry. Some analysts expressed disappointment at the lack of commitment to a firm 2027 release, which could signal a longer delay.

Impact on Stock Performance

As a result of the news, CD Projekt’s stock dropped sharply by 11% as of 0940 GMT, marking its largest one-day loss in two years. The company was the worst performer on Europe’s benchmark STOXX 600 index on the day of the announcement. Despite this, the stock had been up 20% since the beginning of 2025, indicating strong market performance until the release delay news.

Development Timeline and Expectations

In November, CD Projekt had announced that “Witcher IV” had entered full-scale production, and CEO Michal Nowakowski had indicated that it typically takes five to six years to develop a major AAA game. The company had initially revealed the development of the new Witcher saga in March 2022, with high hopes for a new chapter in the series.

CD Projekt Posts 2.3% Drop in Full-Year Net Profit Amid Lack of New Game Releases

Polish video game developer CD Projekt (CDR.WA) reported a 2.3% decline in its full-year net profit on Tuesday, mainly due to the absence of new game releases during the year. The company’s net profit stood at 469.9 million zlotys ($122 million), surpassing analysts’ expectations, which had forecasted a profit of 390 million zlotys, according to a Reuters poll.

While net profit decreased, the company’s revenue dropped nearly 20%, totaling 985 million zlotys for the year. CD Projekt’s performance was supported by the release of the long-anticipated expansion to its flagship game, “Cyberpunk 2077,” which boosted the previous year’s results.

Looking ahead, the company faces a couple of years without a major game release. Its revenue for the upcoming quarters is expected to be largely driven by sales from existing titles. “The results of the CD Projekt Group are primarily driven by sales of ‘Cyberpunk 2077,'” said finance chief Piotr Nielubowicz. “Even in the absence of any major launch, the past year was the third-best in the group’s history in terms of net profit.”

As of November 2024, cumulative sales of “Cyberpunk 2077” had surpassed 30 million copies, while its “Phantom Liberty” expansion had sold more than 8 million units. The company also plans to release “Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition” for macOS in 2024, aiming to tap into a new group of gamers.

In addition, CD Projekt is expanding the “Cyberpunk” universe, with a new animation project currently in development for Netflix, marking another step in the franchise’s growth.
