Tesla Explores Major China Solar Equipment Deal

Tesla is in talks to buy about $2.9 billion worth of solar manufacturing equipment from Chinese suppliers as it pushes to build a large-scale solar production base in the United States.

The discussions involve equipment for making solar panels and cells, with Chinese firms seen as key candidates because of their strong position in global solar machinery. Some of the equipment may require export approval from Chinese authorities before shipment.

The reported move supports Elon Musk’s goal of building 100 gigawatts of solar manufacturing capacity in the U.S. by the end of 2028. Most of that capacity is expected to support Tesla’s own energy needs, while part of it could also be used for SpaceX-related operations.

The potential order also highlights the complexity of reducing U.S. dependence on China, as American clean energy expansion still relies heavily on Chinese industrial equipment. Even with tariffs in place on many solar imports, manufacturing machinery remains difficult to source elsewhere at scale.

If completed, the deal would represent a major boost for Chinese solar equipment makers while strengthening Tesla’s position in U.S. solar manufacturing during a period of rising electricity demand driven by data centers and industrial growth.

US Startup Lyten Acquires Europe’s Largest Battery Storage Factory in Poland

U.S.-based startup Lyten is set to take full ownership of Northvolt Dwa ESS, the largest energy storage systems (ESS) factory in Europe, marking a major expansion of its operations and product offerings. The announcement was made Tuesday as Lyten confirmed plans to restart operations at the Gdansk-based facility immediately.

The acquisition follows the bankruptcy of Swedish battery maker Northvolt’s energy storage division, which filed for insolvency in March. The failure, one of Sweden’s biggest corporate collapses, dashed hopes of developing a strong European competitor to dominant Chinese battery manufacturers. Northvolt had originally shut down the Polish plant in November 2023.

“We plan to immediately restart operations in Poland and deliver on existing and new customer orders,” said Dan Cook, Lyten’s CEO and co-founder.

The 25,000-square-meter facility, which first opened in 2023, houses advanced equipment for manufacturing battery energy storage systems (BESS). It currently supports 6 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of manufacturing capacity, with the potential to scale up to 10 GWh, according to Lyten’s statement. The company added that it already holds contracted orders extending into 2026.

The move positions Lyten as a key player in the European clean energy storage market, where demand for grid-scale battery storage is rapidly growing. The acquisition also offers Lyten a strong foothold in the EU’s strategic push for energy independence and decarbonization.

Financial details of the deal were not disclosed, but completion is expected in the third quarter of 2025.

Meta Signs Deal for Advanced Geothermal Power in New Mexico to Support AI Expansion

Meta has signed an agreement with XGS Energy to develop 150 megawatts of advanced geothermal electricity in New Mexico. The clean energy will power Meta’s expanding artificial intelligence data centers, marking a step forward in the tech giant’s efforts to source sustainable energy for its operations.

This deal highlights a growing trend among major technology companies to secure large-scale, low-carbon power supplies to meet soaring electricity demands driven by AI development. Advanced geothermal energy, unlike conventional geothermal, generates power without relying on natural water sources and produces no climate-warming emissions.

While 150 megawatts is a small portion of the gigawatts of power that Big Tech firms seek for AI data centers, it represents about 4% of total U.S. geothermal production capacity. New Mexico has significant untapped geothermal potential, estimated at around 160,000 megawatts.

The Meta-XGS project is planned to be phased in and operational by the end of this decade. The electricity generated will feed into the local grid and support Meta’s regional operations.
