TikTok Shop Expands to France, Germany, and Italy Amid U.S. Uncertainty

TikTok Shop, the e-commerce division of the popular social media app, is set to launch operations in France, Germany, and Italy starting Monday, marking a major step in its European expansion. The move comes as TikTok’s future in the U.S. remains in jeopardy due to mounting political pressure on its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, to divest the platform.

The shopping feature has been live in the UK since 2021 and entered the U.S. market in September 2023, where it saw robust holiday sales. Despite that momentum, TikTok could face a ban in the United States unless ByteDance secures a deal to transfer ownership to an American buyer.

Accelerated European Growth
Jan Wilk, head of operations for TikTok Shop UK, said the company plans to grow more aggressively in the EU compared to its UK rollout.

“In the UK, this model was very new, and we had to do a lot of education. In Europe, we’re launching with much more speed,” Wilk told Reuters.

In the new markets, TikTok Shop is already onboarding merchants. Notably, supermarket chain Carrefour will sell on the French platform, while AboutYou and Cosnova will participate in Germany.

Beyond Bargain Buys
While TikTok Shop has become known for selling low-cost, direct-from-China goods, the company is working to diversify its product range and price points. Wilk highlighted a UK-based merchant selling second-hand luxury Birkin bags as an example of TikTok Shop’s expanding inventory scope.

The platform’s format allows sellers to host livestreams showcasing products, earning commissions on real-time sales. With a strong influencer ecosystem and built-in entertainment factor, TikTok Shop is pushing for a unique blend of content and commerce.

The latest tariffs introduced by Trump target several Chinese electronics categories, including smartphones, laptops, and smart devices. Additionally, Biden’s administration had previously imposed tariffs on Chinese computer chips, further complicating the situation for Chinese tech firms.

Despite these challenges, iFlyTek is making significant strides in Europe, where it currently operates in France and Hungary. The company plans to expand its presence, with Zhan mentioning that a new office in Paris is expected either this year or next. The firm also aims to broaden its footprint in Europe, with potential plans to enter Spain and Italy in the coming year.

At the Mobile World Congress, iFlyTek launched a new tablet featuring advanced transcription capabilities, underscoring the importance of the European market for the company. Zhan also hinted at further European expansion, selecting new countries based on partnerships already established.

The company, which has a market capitalization of 123 billion Chinese yuan ($16.97 billion), faced significant hurdles in 2019 when it was added to a U.S. trade blacklist. This designation has restricted iFlyTek from purchasing essential components, such as Nvidia’s AI chips, from American suppliers without U.S. government approval. In response, iFlyTek has turned to alternative sources, including Huawei chips and AI models from rising star DeepSeek.

While the trade challenges persist, Zhan expressed confidence in the company’s ability to navigate the situation. He highlighted that many Chinese companies are now manufacturing their own AI chips, a development that has helped mitigate some of the impact from U.S. trade policies.

China-Europe Rivalry Heats Up at Paris Car Show as EV Tariffs Loom

The Paris car show, one of Europe’s largest automotive events, has become a battleground for Chinese and European automakers. One of the key attractions at the event is BYD’s Sea Lion 07 SUV, which is expected to generate buzz among European consumers. However, while Chinese automakers like BYD are selling across Europe, they still struggle with brand recognition. That lack of awareness is something they aim to overcome with more aggressive marketing strategies and product launches.

Other Chinese automakers, such as Leapmotor and GAC, are also making their European debut, with plans to establish hundreds of sales points by 2025. While these companies have gained a foothold by undercutting their European rivals on price, they are also trying to differentiate themselves by offering better equipment and features as standard.

Speaking on French radio, Tavares emphasized that it would ultimately be up to consumers to determine which brands survive, saying, “It’s the clients, not me, but there is no taboo.”

The French government recently announced that it would reduce its subsidies for EV buyers, following in the footsteps of Germany, which ended its EV subsidy program in 2023. These moves are likely to further strain the EV market as manufacturers try to close the price gap between electric vehicles and their cheaper gasoline-powered counterparts.

For Chinese automakers, the European market is critical, as they have largely been shut out of the U.S. market. The Biden administration has imposed a 100% tariff on Chinese-made EVs and proposed restrictions on key Chinese software and hardware in connected vehicles. Chinese companies have been able to leverage their lower production costs and fast development cycles to gain an advantage over European automakers. However, the upcoming EU tariffs could slow down their momentum, depending on how Chinese brands respond. So far, no Chinese automaker has announced plans to raise prices to offset the expected tariffs, but industry analysts warn that increased costs may be inevitable.

As EV adoption continues to rise, the competition between Europe and China is intensifying. While Chinese automakers have gained a reputation for producing affordable, feature-rich EVs, they still face hurdles in brand recognition and consumer trust. Industry insiders predict that price parity between electric and gasoline-powered vehicles could be achieved within the next two to three years, a milestone that could level the playing field for all manufacturers. As John Dunne, an automotive expert at Stax, noted, “The Europeans have massive alarm bells ringing. They have recognized they need to do something pretty radical, and they only have a couple of years to do it.”
