TikTok Shop Expands to France, Germany, and Italy Amid U.S. Uncertainty

TikTok Shop, the e-commerce division of the popular social media app, is set to launch operations in France, Germany, and Italy starting Monday, marking a major step in its European expansion. The move comes as TikTok’s future in the U.S. remains in jeopardy due to mounting political pressure on its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, to divest the platform.

The shopping feature has been live in the UK since 2021 and entered the U.S. market in September 2023, where it saw robust holiday sales. Despite that momentum, TikTok could face a ban in the United States unless ByteDance secures a deal to transfer ownership to an American buyer.

Accelerated European Growth
Jan Wilk, head of operations for TikTok Shop UK, said the company plans to grow more aggressively in the EU compared to its UK rollout.

“In the UK, this model was very new, and we had to do a lot of education. In Europe, we’re launching with much more speed,” Wilk told Reuters.

In the new markets, TikTok Shop is already onboarding merchants. Notably, supermarket chain Carrefour will sell on the French platform, while AboutYou and Cosnova will participate in Germany.

Beyond Bargain Buys
While TikTok Shop has become known for selling low-cost, direct-from-China goods, the company is working to diversify its product range and price points. Wilk highlighted a UK-based merchant selling second-hand luxury Birkin bags as an example of TikTok Shop’s expanding inventory scope.

The platform’s format allows sellers to host livestreams showcasing products, earning commissions on real-time sales. With a strong influencer ecosystem and built-in entertainment factor, TikTok Shop is pushing for a unique blend of content and commerce.

Strategic Timing
TikTok’s deeper push into Europe could serve as a hedge against potential losses in the U.S., where the platform’s fate hinges on ByteDance’s ability to negotiate a deal. The European expansion also reflects TikTok’s broader ambition to transform from a content-sharing app into a full-fledged e-commerce player in global markets.

German TikTok Users Show Greater Sympathy for China, Russia, Poll Reveals

Germans who rely on TikTok for news are less critical of China and Russia and more skeptical of climate change and vaccine effectiveness compared to consumers of traditional media, according to a recent survey by Allensbach, commissioned by a foundation linked to Germany’s liberal Free Democrats.

The poll highlights that only 28.1% of TikTok users fully agreed that China is a dictatorship, compared to 57% of newspaper readers and 56.5% of public TV viewers. Similarly, just 13.6% of TikTok users supported Western backing for Ukraine in its war against Russia, a view shared by 40.2% of national newspaper readers.

The findings come amid U.S. debates on whether to enforce a ban on TikTok over national security concerns, adding weight to arguments that the Chinese-owned app spreads misinformation that could undermine democratic societies.

These attitudes align with broader trends among younger Germans, who are TikTok’s core demographic and have shown increased support for the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party in recent elections.

Disinformation Concerns

The survey also raises alarms about foreign actors, especially Russia, spreading disinformation via social media platforms to advance their agendas. Researchers cited parallels with Romania, where a pro-Russian outsider gained significant traction through social media campaigns in a presidential election later annulled.

Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger, deputy chair of the foundation behind the survey, emphasized TikTok’s influence, saying, “Young people are far more vulnerable to information, and TikTok plays a decisive role. We mustn’t allow Chinese and Russian misinformation to spread in our midst.”

TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, has not commented on the survey.

 

German Government Considers Leaving X Over Algorithm Concerns, Spokesperson Reveals

The German government is actively evaluating the possibility of abandoning its presence on X, formerly known as Twitter, citing concerns over the platform’s algorithms. A government spokesperson confirmed on Friday that this issue is under continuous review, especially following a live broadcast on the platform featuring Elon Musk and Alice Weidel, the leader of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.

The spokesperson explained that X and other social media platforms have algorithms that promote content in ways that are not conducive to “calm, objective, and balanced discourse,” but instead tend to encourage agitation and polarization. Although the government has not made a final decision, it has chosen to remain on the platform for the time being due to its ability to reach a broad audience.

Musk’s growing support for far-right and anti-establishment parties, particularly in the lead-up to Germany’s February 23 election, has sparked controversy. German institutions, including unions and universities, have already distanced themselves from X in protest. During a live session on Thursday, Musk reiterated his endorsement of the AfD, a far-right party that is considered extremist by German security services, which has led to increasing tensions in Berlin.

However, the government spokesperson clarified that concerns over the platform are not directly related to Musk’s political involvement in Germany. The spokesperson emphasized that it is up to the European Commission in Brussels to determine whether X is complying with EU laws, especially during election periods.
