Authorities Investigate Human Remains Found in Neighbor’s Concrete Bunker Amid Search for Missing California Couple

Authorities are working to identify human remains discovered in a concrete bunker beneath the mobile home of a 62-year-old neighbor, Michael Royce Sparks, at a nudist resort in Redlands, California. Sparks has been arrested on suspicion of killing Daniel and Stephanie Menard, a couple missing since August 24. The remains were found in bags following a search prompted by cadaver dogs detecting the presence of a body on the suspect’s property.

The Menards’ neighbor and concerned friend Irene Engkraf alerted the police after noticing the couple had not attended church and their unlocked car was abandoned near their home. Upon searching the Menards’ house, Engkraf found their phones and Stephanie’s purse, prompting further investigation. Police later received a tip connecting Sparks to the couple’s disappearance.

Authorities tore into Sparks’ home after lengthy negotiations, eventually finding him barricaded inside with a rifle. He attempted to take his own life, but his weapon misfired, leading to his arrest. As the investigation continues, authorities are using heavy equipment to secure the potentially unstable bunker while gathering evidence. Sparks, who had previously expressed animosity toward the Menards, will appear in court on Tuesday and remains in custody without bail.

Friends and neighbors expressed shock and confusion, describing the Menards as kind, churchgoing people who didn’t deserve such a fate. The coroner’s office is working to confirm the identity of the remains, while the community mourns the likely loss of their beloved neighbors.

Dog Breeder Found Dead; Up to 10 Doberman Puppies Missing as Homicide Investigation Unfolds

Authorities are investigating the death of Paul Peavey, a 57-year-old dog breeder from Clear Creek County, Colorado, as a homicide. Peavey’s body was discovered by a privately organized search party on August 24, three days after he was reported missing. The Clear Creek County Sheriff’s Office, along with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation and the 5th Judicial District Attorney’s Office, is conducting the investigation.

Peavey, known for breeding Doberman puppies, was last heard from on the night of August 19. His death was confirmed by the coroner later on August 24, and an autopsy is underway to determine the cause and manner of his death.

Following Peavey’s death, as many as 10 Doberman puppies have been reported missing from his property. Authorities are seeking public assistance in locating these puppies. The sheriff’s office noted that the puppies are microchipped, which could help in identifying them if they have been sold or otherwise distributed. They are asking anyone who may have purchased a Doberman puppy from Peavey’s business, Elite European Dobermans, since June 2024 to contact them.

The sheriff’s office is particularly interested in any puppies bought in the central Colorado area since August 20, the day after Peavey was last heard from. They urge anyone with information or who has received a puppy from Peavey to reach out to them.

The investigation into Peavey’s death is ongoing, and police hope that locating the missing puppies may provide crucial leads in solving the case. Authorities have expressed appreciation for the tips they have received and are committed to releasing further information that does not compromise the investigation.
