OpenAI set to launch AI-powered browser to rival Google Chrome

OpenAI is reportedly preparing to release a new AI-powered web browser in the coming weeks that aims to challenge Google Chrome’s dominance, according to sources familiar with the matter. The browser will leverage artificial intelligence to transform the way users interact with the web, potentially offering a more integrated experience that keeps some browsing activities within a ChatGPT-style chat interface rather than directing users to external websites.

This move marks a strategic push by OpenAI to gain direct access to user data—an essential asset for competing with Google, whose Chrome browser is a critical component of Alphabet’s advertising business, generating nearly 75% of its revenue. By controlling browsing data, OpenAI could directly rival Google in targeted advertising and user engagement.

With over 500 million weekly active ChatGPT users, OpenAI’s browser has the potential to significantly disrupt Google’s advertising ecosystem. The browser will be built on Chromium, the open-source codebase behind Chrome and other browsers like Microsoft Edge and Opera, allowing OpenAI to control data collection and integration more effectively.

The new browser is also designed to integrate OpenAI’s AI agent tools, such as Operator, enabling automated actions on behalf of users, including booking reservations or filling forms within websites—enhancing convenience and utility.

OpenAI’s founder Sam Altman, who has driven the company’s rapid innovation since ChatGPT’s launch in 2022, is betting on this browser as part of a broader strategy to embed AI deeper into daily personal and work life.

Competition is fierce: Google Chrome currently commands over two-thirds of the global browser market with more than 3 billion users, while Apple’s Safari holds a distant second place with 16%. Other AI-driven browsers like Comet by Perplexity, The Browser Company, and Brave have already launched AI-enhanced browsing experiences.

The Department of Justice’s ongoing antitrust actions against Google—following a ruling that Alphabet holds a monopoly in online search—highlight the regulatory challenges facing the search and browser giant. OpenAI has even expressed interest in acquiring Chrome if forced divestiture occurs.

Unlike merely creating a plug-in for existing browsers, OpenAI’s decision to build its own browser aims to maximize control over user data, a crucial factor for AI’s effectiveness and business value.

OpenAI declined to comment on the launch details.

Sam Altman Reveals Meta Offered $100 Million Bonuses to Lure OpenAI Talent

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman disclosed that Meta has made massive $100 million bonus offers to some OpenAI employees as part of its aggressive strategy to build out its artificial intelligence capabilities. Speaking on the Uncapped podcast, Altman said Meta is trying to recruit top AI engineers with exceptionally large signing bonuses and compensation packages.

Despite the lucrative offers, Altman noted that none of OpenAI’s key talent have yet accepted Meta’s proposals. The move underscores the intense competition among tech giants to secure leading AI researchers amid a booming AI race.

Meta, which recently invested $14.3 billion in AI data-labeling firm Scale AI and hired its CEO Alexandr Wang to lead a new superintelligence unit, is looking to catch up with rivals like OpenAI and Google. The company has faced challenges including staff departures and delays in releasing open-source AI models.

Altman added that Meta views OpenAI as its “biggest competitor” in the AI space. Reuters could not independently verify the bonus claims and Meta has not commented.

AMD Unveils AI Server and Chips as OpenAI Joins Development Effort

AMD CEO Lisa Su introduced a major new line of AI hardware on Thursday, unveiling both the MI350 and MI400 series of AI chips and announcing plans to release the company’s first AI server, called “Helios,” in 2026. The launch signals AMD’s most direct challenge yet to Nvidia’s dominance in the AI server and chip market.

The announcement was made at AMD’s “Advancing AI” developer conference in San Jose, California. The Helios servers will house 72 MI400 chips, designed to compete directly with Nvidia’s current NVL72 servers powered by its Blackwell processors. In a notable difference from Nvidia’s closed ecosystem, Su emphasized that many aspects of AMD’s server and networking standards would be openly available to the broader industry, including rivals like Intel.

“The future of AI is not going to be built by any one company or in a closed ecosystem. It’s going to be shaped by open collaboration across the industry,” Su stated.

Su was joined on stage by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, who confirmed that OpenAI is already working with AMD on its MI450 chips to help optimize them for AI workloads. Altman remarked on OpenAI’s rapid infrastructure growth, calling the pace “crazy” and noting continued expansion with AMD’s hardware.

Executives from Meta Platforms, Elon Musk’s xAI, and Oracle also appeared during the event to showcase how their companies are adopting AMD’s processors. Additionally, Crusoe, a cloud provider specializing in AI, disclosed plans to purchase $400 million worth of AMD’s new chips.

Despite the announcement, AMD shares slipped 2.2%, with analysts suggesting the company still faces significant headwinds in dislodging Nvidia’s dominant market position. Summit Insights analyst Kinngai Chan noted that the newly announced products are unlikely to shift the competitive balance immediately.

AMD has aggressively expanded its AI capabilities over the past year, completing its acquisition of server manufacturer ZT Systems in March and making 25 strategic investments in AI-related startups. The company recently hired engineers from Untether AI and Lamini, further strengthening its chip design and software development teams.

However, AMD’s ROCm software stack continues to lag behind Nvidia’s highly entrenched CUDA platform, which many in the industry see as a major factor behind Nvidia’s dominance.

Nevertheless, AMD remains optimistic about its growth prospects, even as U.S. export controls tighten on AI chip sales to China. When reporting earnings in May, Su reiterated expectations for strong double-digit growth in AI chip sales despite these headwinds.
