WhatsApp has rolled out a variety of exciting new features to add some festive cheer to the app as users head into the New Year. Announced on Thursday, these updates are designed to enhance both the texting and calling experience. Among the highlights are new calling effects that users can apply during video calls, all themed around New Year celebrations. For a limited time, WhatsApp is also offering fresh animations and sticker packs, perfect for spreading holiday joy. This release follows in the footsteps of Instagram, which recently introduced its own 2024 Collage feature for a limited time.

The New Year-themed updates on WhatsApp bring a host of fun additions to video calls. Users can now apply festive filters, backgrounds, and effects, adding a celebratory touch to their virtual hangouts. This seasonal update also includes new animated reactions that users can send when responding to messages with party-related emojis. In addition to the new video call effects, WhatsApp has introduced a specially curated New Year’s Eve sticker pack, designed to help users share their festive spirit in a creative way. These stickers are complemented by avatar stickers, also themed around the New Year. WhatsApp believes these additions will offer users new and exciting ways to send holiday greetings and messages in a fun, interactive manner.

With the introduction of these fresh features, WhatsApp is making it easier for users to connect and share the excitement of the season with friends and family. Whether it’s through festive video call effects, animated reactions, or personalized stickers, WhatsApp is ensuring that users can bring some extra joy to their messages as they welcome in the New Year.

Albania TikTok Ban Sparks Debate Over Freedom of Speech

Albania’s recent decision to impose a year-long ban on TikTok has ignited a heated debate about freedom of speech and its potential impact on business operations. The ban, announced by Prime Minister Edi Rama on December 21, follows the stabbing death of a 14-year-old boy in November, which was reportedly linked to online clashes between students. The government claims the move is aimed at reducing youth violence, but critics argue it threatens both commerce and civil liberties ahead of the country’s May elections.

For small business owners like Ergus Katiaj, who uses TikTok to promote his shop in Tirana, the ban could have a significant financial impact. Katiaj relies on the app to attract customers for late-night deliveries of potato chips, cigarettes, and alcohol, with TikTok’s free marketing adding roughly 1,000 euros to his monthly earnings. He expressed concerns about the loss of this tool, emphasizing how TikTok has become essential for local businesses.

The ban comes amid growing concerns globally about the potential harms of TikTok, particularly in relation to security issues tied to its owner, China-based ByteDance, and its connection to the Chinese government. More than 20 countries have already imposed bans or restrictions on the app, citing concerns about inappropriate content or data privacy risks. However, critics in Albania view the move as part of a broader effort by Rama to stifle political dissent, especially after a year of unrest marked by violent protests against the imprisonment of opposition leaders.

Rights groups and opposition politicians have voiced concerns that the ban is a dangerous precedent that could lead to governments shutting down other platforms at will. Orkidea Xhaferaj of the Tirana-based think tank SCiDEV warned that such actions could limit citizens’ ability to freely communicate and organize, particularly as TikTok has become a powerful tool for opposition groups to spread their message.

TikTok itself has questioned the Albanian government’s decision, stating that reports suggest the violent videos leading up to the incident were posted on another platform, not TikTok. The company is seeking clarification from the government about the basis for the ban.

In addition to concerns over free speech, the decision has sparked fears that it may be a move to curtail opposition communication ahead of the upcoming elections. Arlind Qori, leader of the opposition party Bashke, argued that the ban would undermine the ability of political opponents to reach voters, calling it an attempt to silence dissent.

Prime Minister Rama, however, has defended the ban as a protective measure for young people. He reiterated that the Albanian version of TikTok would not showcase harmful content, unlike the international version, which he described as a platform for “scum and scoundrels.” Rama emphasized the need to protect youth from such influences.

Instagram Launches 2024 Collage Feature with New Year-Themed Fonts

Instagram has introduced a new feature for users to reflect on their year by creating a personalized collage of their most memorable moments. This feature, available in the Instagram story interface, allows users to select and resize images freely to craft a collage. Instagram, owned by Meta Platforms, is rolling out this update as part of their end-of-year festivities, and it is expected to be available through the first week of January. Along with the collage feature, the platform is also launching various New Year-themed templates to further enhance the holiday experience.

The 2024 Collage feature enables users to select multiple images from their Instagram feed and place them freely on the screen. Once the collage is created, users can personalize it with a range of New Year-themed fonts. Some of the font options include “How 2024 Started,” “How 2024 Ended,” and “HNY,” allowing users to share their reflections and celebrations in a creative and festive manner. Once the collage is complete, it can be easily shared on Instagram Stories, enabling followers to join in on the fun and celebrate the New Year together.

In addition to the collage feature, Instagram is expanding its “Add Yours” feature to include year-end-themed templates. This allows users to share their collages in response to others, creating a fun and interactive way to reflect on the year with friends and followers. The platform is also rolling out special text effects for the New Year and Countdown themes, along with festive visuals for Direct Messages (DMs). These new features aim to enhance the celebratory mood as users countdown to the new year.

Furthermore, Instagram has introduced hidden phrases in DMs and Notes, such as “Happy New Year” and “Hello 2025,” which trigger unique on-screen special effects. These effects are designed to add an element of surprise and excitement to private messages, making them more interactive and engaging. With these updates, Instagram is aiming to help users commemorate the past year and usher in the new one in a creative and connected way.
