OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Sora Services Resume Operations Following Major Outage

OpenAI faced a significant service disruption on Thursday, affecting its widely-used ChatGPT chatbot, API services, and its text-to-image generation platform, Sora. The outage, which began around 1:30 PM ET on December 26 (12:00 AM IST, December 27), left thousands of users in the US and other regions unable to access these services. According to online outage monitoring platforms, the disruption persisted for nearly five hours before OpenAI confirmed that all systems were back to full functionality.

Reports from Down Detector, an outage monitoring platform, indicated a sharp spike in user complaints about ChatGPT access starting at 1:30 PM ET. Over 50,000 users reported issues within the first hour of the outage. At 2:00 PM ET, OpenAI acknowledged the problem through an update on its official status page, stating that they were dealing with high error rates across ChatGPT, the API, and Sora. This communication reassured users that the issue was being actively investigated.

The cause of the outage was later attributed to an “upstream provider,” although OpenAI did not elaborate further. Around the same time, Microsoft reported a power issue at one of its data centers. This problem disrupted several Microsoft services, including Microsoft 365, Azure, and Xbox cloud gaming, sparking speculation about a potential link between the two events. However, neither OpenAI nor Microsoft confirmed a direct connection between their respective outages.

By evening, OpenAI updated users that the affected platforms were fully operational once again. The outage underscored the growing reliance on AI-powered tools for both personal and professional use, as well as the challenges companies face in ensuring uninterrupted service. While OpenAI has not provided further details about the incident, the quick resolution highlights its commitment to maintaining service reliability and addressing issues promptly.

OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Sora Services Resume After Hours-Long Outage

OpenAI announced Thursday that its popular ChatGPT assistant, Sora video generator, and developer interface were fully operational again following an hours-long outage. The disruption lasted just over four hours, briefly halting access to some of the company’s widely used services.

This outage comes at a time when ChatGPT continues to expand rapidly. Sam Altman, OpenAI’s CEO, reported earlier in December that the service now reaches 300 million active users weekly. Moreover, Apple recently integrated ChatGPT into its software updates for iPhone, iPad, and Mac, bringing further mainstream exposure to the tool.

The company’s status page confirmed the issue had been resolved after the brief downtime. In June, OpenAI also experienced a similar issue, which lasted over five hours.

OpenAI, which reached a $157 billion valuation following an October funding round involving major investors such as Microsoft and Nvidia, has seen a meteoric rise since the launch of ChatGPT in late 2022. This growth has cemented its position as one of the most talked-about companies in the tech world.

Additionally, OpenAI had announced the release of Sora on Monday to users in the U.S. and other countries. However, Altman admitted on X the following day that the demand for Sora had exceeded expectations, and it would take time before everyone gains access.

OpenAI Releases Text-to-Video AI Model “Sora” for ChatGPT Plus and Pro Users

OpenAI has officially launched “Sora,” its advanced text-to-video artificial intelligence model, for ChatGPT Plus and Pro users, signaling a significant expansion into multimodal AI technologies. The model, which generates videos from text descriptions, is seen as a direct competitor to similar offerings from Meta, Google, and Stability AI’s Stable Video Diffusion.

Initially introduced in February 2023 during a limited research preview phase, Sora is now accessible as Sora Turbo at no additional cost to eligible users. In a blog post, OpenAI revealed plans to implement tailored pricing for different user types starting early next year.

With Sora, users can create videos of up to 20 seconds in 1080p resolution across widescreen, vertical, or square aspect ratios. However, its availability is geographically restricted; it will not be accessible in EU countries, the UK, or Switzerland at launch, though users in other regions where ChatGPT operates will have access.

Safety Measures and Restrictions

OpenAI emphasized its commitment to preventing misuse of the technology. Sora will block the creation and upload of harmful content, including child sexual abuse material and explicit deepfakes. The company also plans to roll out features allowing uploads of people cautiously, refining its safeguards against deepfake misuse as adoption grows.

Targeting Competitors in the Multimodal AI Space

Sora’s release comes as OpenAI steps up competition with industry players like Meta, Alphabet (Google), and Stability AI, which have also launched text-to-video solutions. Microsoft, OpenAI’s primary backer, is expected to integrate these advanced capabilities into its ecosystem, bolstering its position in the generative AI market.

The launch of Sora reflects OpenAI’s ambition to remain at the forefront of generative AI innovations, catering to both creative and professional use cases while addressing the ethical challenges of the technology.
