Apple Reportedly Delays Next iPhone Air Launch Amid Weak Sales

Apple has reportedly decided to delay the next version of its iPhone Air until after fall 2026, according to a report from The Information, citing sources familiar with the matter.

The move comes just a year after Apple introduced the iPhone Air (2025), a thinner and lighter addition to its flagship lineup designed to appeal to consumers seeking a sleek, minimalist form factor. However, analysts say demand for the model has been weaker than expected, raising concerns about the market appetite for design-focused variants that make performance trade-offs.

While praised for its elegant design, the iPhone Air’s smaller battery and pared-down camera system were viewed by some consumers as compromises compared to the iPhone Pro and Pro Max models.

Apple has not commented on the report, and Reuters said it could not independently verify the delay.

In October, Apple announced that the iPhone Air would be available for pre-order in China, following regulatory approval for eSIM-only connectivity, meaning the model is sold without a physical SIM tray.

The delay signals that Apple may be reassessing its strategy for the Air model as global smartphone demand remains under pressure and competition intensifies in China and other key markets.

Apple unveils new M5 chip powering upgraded MacBook Pro, iPad Pro and Vision Pro

Apple introduced its latest generation of hardware on Wednesday, rolling out new versions of the MacBook Pro, iPad Pro, and Vision Pro headset, all powered by the company’s most advanced M5 chip. The updates reinforce Apple’s push to stay ahead of rivals like Qualcomm and Intel, which have recently launched AI-optimized processors.

The new 14-inch MacBook Pro equipped with the M5 chip marks a significant upgrade from last year’s M4 lineup. Built using an advanced 3-nanometer process, the M5 delivers greater speed and energy efficiency, enabling devices to run large language models directly on the device. Despite the leap in performance, pricing remains unchanged — the MacBook Pro starts at $1,599, the iPad Pro at $999, and the second-generation Vision Pro headset at $3,499.

Apple said the new hardware lineup targets creative professionals and developers seeking on-device AI capabilities. The company’s decision to debut the M5 in its high-end products mirrors its strategy from previous years, prioritizing premium models before bringing the chip to other devices.

The Vision Pro, launched in 2023 as Apple’s first major new product in a decade, has received positive reviews for its visual quality but limited adoption. The updated version aims to attract more users with better performance and smoother app integration. Meanwhile, iPad sales are projected to grow about 6% in fiscal 2025 after a multi-year slump, aided by lower-cost models and a recovery in global electronics demand.

Apple defies slowdown with higher iPhone shipments in China thanks to iPhone 17

Apple’s shipments in China rose slightly in the third quarter, boosted by strong demand for its new iPhone 17 series, according to data released by research firm IDC. Shipments grew 0.6% year-on-year to 10.8 million units, giving Apple a 15.8% share of China’s smartphone market and securing its position as the country’s second-largest vendor.

Overall, China’s smartphone market continued to face weak demand, with total shipments falling 0.6% to 68.4 million units in the third quarter, following a 4% drop in the previous quarter. Despite the sluggish environment, Apple outperformed rivals, becoming the only brand among China’s top three vendors to post growth during the period.

IDC analyst Will Wong credited the success to Apple’s “value-for-money” iPhone 17 base model, which appealed to cost-conscious consumers while maintaining premium quality. By contrast, Huawei’s shipments slipped 1% to 10.4 million units, placing it third, and Xiaomi’s fell 1.7% to 10 million units, ranking fourth. Market leader Vivo saw a sharper decline of 7.8%, down to 11.8 million units.

IDC expects the Chinese smartphone market to recover modestly in early Q4, driven by the release of new flagship models launched in recent months.
