Zelensky Confirms Ukrainian Forces Are Engaged Inside Russian Territory

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has officially confirmed that Ukrainian troops are actively fighting inside Russian territory, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict. The acknowledgment follows a surprise cross-border incursion by Ukrainian forces into Russia’s Kursk region, an operation that has caught both Russia and Ukraine’s allies off guard.

In his Saturday night address, Zelensky praised the Ukrainian armed forces for pushing the conflict into the aggressor’s territory, emphasizing that Ukraine is capable of applying the necessary pressure to restore justice. This is the first time Zelensky has openly admitted to the incursion, despite mounting evidence, including videos and reports of Ukrainian soldiers operating within Russia.

The incursion into Kursk has presented a considerable challenge for the Kremlin. Russian authorities have responded by imposing a counterterrorist operation in Kursk and two other border regions, with over 76,000 people evacuated from the affected areas as of Saturday. Despite this, Ukrainian forces have managed to hold their positions and even make slight advances, according to the U.S.-based Institute for the Study of War (ISW).

This development is significant, as it marks the first time that regular Ukrainian military units have entered Russian territory. While Ukraine has previously targeted border regions like Belgorod with airstrikes and sabotage, the operation in Kursk represents a new phase in the conflict.

The Russian government has attempted to downplay the incursion, possibly to avoid domestic panic or backlash over its inability to protect its borders. The counterterrorist operation gives Russian authorities broader powers, including the ability to monitor communications and restrict movement, but falls short of a state of war or martial law declaration.

Meanwhile, Russia has continued its offensive in Ukraine, launching drone and missile strikes against the Kyiv region on Sunday. The attacks resulted in civilian casualties, including the deaths of a father and his four-year-old son in Brovary, near the capital. These strikes follow a deadly missile attack on a supermarket in Kostiantynivka, Donetsk region, which killed 11 people and injured 37.

The conflict has led to a devastating summer for Ukrainian civilians, with July marking the deadliest month for civilian casualties since October 2022, according to UN monitors.

Israeli Airstrike on Gaza School Kills Over 70, Sparks Outrage

An Israeli airstrike on the al-Taba’een school in Gaza City has resulted in the deaths of more than 70 people, according to Fadl Naeem, the head of al-Ahli Hospital. The hospital has struggled with the overwhelming number of casualties, many of whom are unrecognizable due to the severity of their injuries. The situation has been described as “catastrophic,” with medical staff unable to properly treat the wounded.

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have claimed that the school, which was housing displaced Palestinians, also served as a Hamas and Islamic Jihad military facility. The IDF asserts that around 20 militants were operating from the location. However, Hamas has denied these allegations. Early estimates from Hamas’s health ministry and local civil defense agency vary, with reported deaths ranging from 60 to over 90.

The al-Taba’een school was sheltering over 1,000 people, including those displaced from Beit Hanoun. The building, which also served as a mosque, was struck during dawn prayers. Witnesses described a horrific scene with widespread destruction and casualties. Jaafar Taha, a local student, reported hearing screams for help and witnessing body parts and blood scattered throughout the area.

UNICEF condemned the attack, emphasizing that schools and other civilian shelters are being used by families seeking refuge. Philippe Lazzarini, head of UNRWA, called for an end to the violence. The European Union’s foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, expressed horror at the images and condemned the massacre.

The IDF maintains that the strike targeted a Hamas command center and claims the casualty figures provided by Hamas do not align with their intelligence. Hamas has labeled the attack as a “horrific crime” and accused Israel of a broader strategy to “exterminate Palestinians.” Fatah, Hamas’s rival, has condemned the action as part of a policy of cumulative killing.

Recent months have seen a troubling pattern of attacks on schools in Gaza, with over a dozen reported since early July. These strikes are part of Israel’s stated aim to dismantle Hamas’s military infrastructure, though this claim is frequently disputed by Hamas.

The escalation in violence has put further strain on ceasefire negotiations, already hindered by the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh. Egypt and Jordan have criticized Israel’s actions as obstructive to peace efforts.

The ongoing conflict, triggered by a large-scale Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, has resulted in significant casualties on both sides. According to Gaza’s health ministry, over 39,790 Palestinians have been killed since the beginning of the Israeli military campaign.

Plane Crash in São Paulo State Claims Lives of All 62 Onboard

A tragic plane crash in São Paulo, Brazil, has resulted in the deaths of all 62 people on board. The twin-engine turboprop, operated by Voepass, was en route from Cascavel in Paraná to São Paulo city when it crashed in the town of Vinhedo.

Social media footage captured the plane descending vertically and spiraling before impact. The aircraft, carrying 58 passengers and four crew members, crashed into a residential area, but miraculously, no one on the ground was injured. The impact damaged one home in a condominium complex, though none of the residents were hurt.

Local media, including GloboNews, reported a large fire and smoking wreckage in the residential area. Emergency services, including police and fire teams, have responded to the scene, and local hospitals are on high alert.

The plane, an ATR 72-500 built in 2010, took off from Cascavel at 11:56 local time (14:56 GMT). The last signal from the aircraft was received about an hour and a half later. Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva expressed his condolences, calling the news “very sad” and extending solidarity to the victims’ families.

Valinhos, a nearby town, dispatched 20 emergency personnel to the crash site, and São Paulo’s governor, Tarcísio de Freitas, is also en route. ATR, the plane’s manufacturer, has pledged support for the investigation and expressed sympathy for those affected.
