Starlink to Lower Satellite Orbits in 2026 to Improve Space Safety

Starlink plans to begin reconfiguring its satellite constellation in 2026 by lowering all spacecraft currently orbiting at around 550 kilometres to approximately 480 kilometres, according to Michael Nicolls, vice president of Starlink engineering at SpaceX.

Nicolls said the move is aimed at enhancing space safety by operating satellites at lower altitudes, where the overall congestion of objects is significantly reduced. In a post on X, he said that condensing Starlink’s orbits would lower the aggregate risk of collisions, as there are fewer debris objects and planned satellite constellations below the 500-kilometre threshold.

The announcement follows an incident disclosed by Starlink in December, when one of its satellites experienced an anomaly in orbit. The spacecraft, operating at an altitude of about 418 kilometres, lost communications and generated a small amount of debris after what appeared to be an onboard explosion. The satellite rapidly dropped around four kilometres in altitude, marking a rare kinetic accident for the satellite internet provider.

Starlink said the incident involved just one satellite out of nearly 10,000 currently in orbit as part of its global broadband network. While the amount of debris was described as limited, the event highlighted growing concerns over orbital safety as low Earth orbit becomes increasingly crowded.

The number of spacecraft circling Earth has surged in recent years as companies and governments race to deploy large satellite constellations for broadband internet, communications and Earth observation services. Once primarily known for its rocket launch business, SpaceX has become the world’s largest satellite operator through Starlink, delivering internet connectivity to consumers, governments and enterprise customers worldwide.

By lowering its satellites’ operating altitude, Starlink aims to reduce long-term debris risks and ensure that any non-functioning spacecraft naturally deorbit more quickly, contributing to safer and more sustainable use of Earth’s orbital environment.

Spacecoin Sends Blockchain Data Through Space in First-of-Its-Kind Test to Challenge Starlink

U.S. satellite startup Spacecoin announced on Wednesday that it had successfully transmitted secured blockchain data through space, marking what it called an industry first and a potential challenge to Elon Musk’s Starlink.

The company’s goal is to create a decentralized satellite network offering connectivity and data storage for users in regions where internet access is unreliable, censored, or prohibitively expensive, according to its founder Tae Oh.

HOW IT WORKS

Unlike Starlink — where SpaceX maintains full control over its vast satellite constellation — Spacecoin envisions an open, participatory model that allows users, developers, and organizations to contribute to the network and verify transactions.
Its technology uses blockchain encryption to ensure that data sent through satellites cannot be intercepted, altered, or falsified.

During the test, Spacecoin transmitted blockchain data over 7,000 kilometers, from Chile to the Azores, entirely through a satellite link — without relying on terrestrial internet.
The nanosatellite used in the experiment was built by Bulgarian microsatellite manufacturer EnduroSat, and the company said the data returned to Earth intact and verifiable.

“Beyond end users, we are also targeting builders — such as developers, telecom companies, NGOs, and infrastructure partners,” said founder Tae Oh.
“For people using the internet, this means the information or payments they send can’t be faked, changed, or intercepted by bad actors.”

CONTEXT AND FUTURE PLANS

The success of Spacecoin’s test comes amid a boom in satellite internet services as global demand for secure broadband increases.
While J.P. Morgan previously tested blockchain payments between satellites, Spacecoin’s test is the first to bypass terrestrial networks entirely, operating solely in orbit.

Currently, Spacecoin has just one satellite, launched in December 2024 on a SpaceX rocket, and orbits in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) at up to 2,000 km altitude.
The company plans to add three more satellites by the end of 2025 to expand coverage and reliability.

With Starlink’s 8,000-satellite fleet dominating global satellite broadband, Spacecoin’s blockchain-based approach positions it as an innovative but niche challenger, combining crypto technology with space-based communication infrastructure.

Eutelsat Competes for Secure Satellite Telecoms Contract in Italy

Eutelsat, a Franco-British satellite operator, is reportedly in discussions with the Italian government to provide secure satellite communication systems, a move that places it in direct competition with Elon Musk’s Starlink. The Italian government is seeking to ensure encrypted communications between officials, diplomats, and defense personnel working in high-risk areas. Sources close to the matter confirmed that Eutelsat, alongside Starlink, is being considered for the contract, which is critical to Italy’s national security.

The involvement of Eutelsat has not been previously disclosed, highlighting Europe’s desire to establish alternatives to Starlink, which currently dominates the satellite communication sector. This interest in European alternatives comes amid rising geopolitical tensions, particularly regarding the war in Ukraine, where Starlink’s role has become more contentious.

Eutelsat, which merged with OneWeb in 2023, operates a constellation of around 650 low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites. While its satellite network is smaller than Starlink’s 6,700 active satellites, Eutelsat’s shares have surged recently due to ongoing discussions with the European Union regarding internet access for Ukraine.

The company has confirmed its regular engagement with European governments to provide secure satellite communication services. However, Eutelsat declined to comment specifically on its talks with Italy, citing confidentiality.

The Italian government has expressed concerns about relying on foreign companies for sensitive national security contracts. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s right-wing government has faced criticism for considering Starlink, especially given its ties to Elon Musk, who is also a close ally of U.S. President Donald Trump. While no contract has been signed with Starlink, Italy is considering alternatives, including developing its own low-orbit satellites. However, progress on this front has been slow, with delays in the EU’s IRIS² satellite project.

Reports suggest that Italy may consider a deal with Starlink worth 1.5 billion euros ($1.61 billion) over five years, although no agreement has been finalized.
