Nvidia, Microsoft, Amazon in talks to invest up to $60 billion in OpenAI

Major technology companies Nvidia, Microsoft, and Amazon are in discussions to invest up to $60 billion in OpenAI, according to a report by The Information. The talks highlight the growing scale of investment required to develop and operate advanced artificial intelligence models.

Nvidia, an existing OpenAI investor whose chips power many of its AI systems, is reportedly considering an investment of up to $30 billion. Microsoft, a long-term backer, is said to be in talks to invest less than $10 billion, while Amazon, which would be a new investor, is discussing a significantly larger commitment that could exceed $20 billion.

The report said OpenAI is close to receiving formal term sheets from the potential investors. Amazon’s participation may be linked to broader commercial negotiations, including expanded cloud infrastructure agreements and the sale of OpenAI products such as enterprise ChatGPT subscriptions. The talks come as OpenAI faces rising costs to train and run its models amid intensifying competition in the AI sector.

Gates and OpenAI Team Up for AI Health Push in African Countries

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and OpenAI have launched a $50 million partnership to help African countries deploy artificial intelligence to strengthen health systems amid sharp cuts to international aid. The initiative, called Horizon1000, will work with national leaders to identify priority use cases, beginning with Rwanda.

Announcing the plan, Bill Gates said AI could be a “gamechanger” for countries facing severe shortages of health workers and infrastructure. Speaking in Davos, he said innovation is needed to reverse setbacks following aid reductions that coincided with the first rise in preventable child deaths this century. The Gates Foundation estimates global development assistance for health fell by nearly 27% last year.

Horizon1000 aims to reach 1,000 primary health clinics and surrounding communities by 2028. The focus is expected to include maternal health and HIV care, using AI to provide guidance before clinic visits, bridge language gaps, reduce paperwork, and better connect patient records. Rwanda’s ICT minister Paula Ingabire said responsible AI use can ease burdens on healthcare workers while improving quality and access. Gates added that AI could cut visit times roughly in half while delivering better care.

OpenAI Rolls Out Age Prediction on ChatGPT

OpenAI said it is rolling out age prediction on ChatGPT worldwide to identify whether an account is likely owned by a minor, as the company prepares to introduce adult content features for verified users.

OpenAI said that when its model estimates an account may belong to someone under 18, ChatGPT will automatically apply additional safeguards to limit exposure to sensitive content. Users incorrectly classified as under 18 can restore full access by submitting a selfie through Persona, an identity verification service. In the European Union, the feature will be introduced in the coming weeks.

The move comes as OpenAI lays the groundwork for an “adult mode” on ChatGPT. Applications chief Fidji Simo previously said adult features are expected to debut in the first quarter of 2026, following comments from chief executive Sam Altman about allowing mature content for users who verify their age.

ChatGPT has around 800 million weekly active users. Backed by Microsoft, OpenAI has also begun introducing ads to some U.S. users as it seeks new revenue streams to support rising computing and infrastructure costs.
