Xiaomi’s YU7 Electric Crossover SUV to Compete with Tesla’s Model Y

Xiaomi, the Chinese tech giant, is set to launch its first electric crossover SUV, YU7, with a driving range of up to 770 kilometers (478 miles), according to a government document released on Thursday. The YU7 is expected to hit the market this summer, positioning itself as a direct competitor to Tesla’s Model Y.

The YU7 will feature a battery-powered drivetrain combined with traditional crossover SUV characteristics. Along with the 770 km variant, Xiaomi will also offer shorter-range versions with 675 km and 760 km ranges. The vehicle has been added to a list of models that qualify for purchase tax breaks, as indicated in an industry ministry notice.

Tesla, which began deliveries of its refreshed Model Y in February, offers a long-range variant with a 719 km driving range per charge, up from 688 km in the previous version. Its rear-drive variant now offers a range of 593 km, a significant increase from its previous 554 km range.

Xiaomi has confirmed that both the Xiaomi 15 and Xiaomi 15 Ultra will officially launch in India. The announcement comes just hours after the global debut of the 15 series, ahead of the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2025 in Barcelona. While the standard Xiaomi 15 model made its initial appearance in China last October alongside the Xiaomi 15 Pro (which remains exclusive to China), the Xiaomi 15 Ultra was unveiled in China on February 28, generating significant excitement in the smartphone market.

The official Xiaomi India account took to X (formerly Twitter) to announce the much-awaited Indian launch, which will take place at 12pm IST on March 11. Alongside the announcement, the company showcased the Xiaomi 15 Ultra in its Silver Chrome color option, while the standard model was presented in the Bright Silver hue. The reveal highlights the premium design and features of both variants, which are expected to make a strong impact in the Indian market.

In terms of specifications, while the exact India-specific details have yet to be officially confirmed, it is expected that the Xiaomi 15 will follow the same configuration as the global variant. The global version boasts a 6.36-inch 8T LTPO AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate. Under the hood, it is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset, paired with up to 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM and up to 1TB of UFS 4.0 internal storage. The rear camera system includes a Leica-branded triple setup with three 50-megapixel sensors—one for wide-angle, one for telephoto, and one for ultra-wide shots—while the front camera offers 32-megapixel capabilities for selfies.

The Xiaomi 15 is equipped with a 5,240mAh battery, supporting 90W wired fast charging and 50W wireless charging. The device runs on the Android 15-based HyperOS 2 operating system, which offers an upgraded user experience. With these impressive specs, the Xiaomi 15 series is poised to compete in the high-end smartphone market in India, offering cutting-edge technology and performance.

Xiaomi 15 Series Embraces Google Gemini; HyperOS 2.0 Global Launch Timeline Announced

Xiaomi 15 Series Integrates Google Gemini AI; Global Rollout of HyperOS 2.0 Announced

Xiaomi has officially announced a collaboration with Google, bringing the Gemini artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot to its first-party apps within the Xiaomi 15 series. This move, revealed ahead of the Mobile World Congress (MWC 2025) in Barcelona, marks a significant step in AI-driven smartphone capabilities. With this integration, Gemini can access and assist users within Xiaomi apps such as Notes, Calendar, and Clock. Alongside this AI-powered upgrade, Xiaomi has also expanded its global smartphone lineup with the launch of the Xiaomi 15 Ultra and Xiaomi 15 in international markets.

Through this partnership, Xiaomi is allowing a third-party AI service to operate within its proprietary apps for the first time. While details on the functionality remain limited, the company has confirmed that Gemini will enable users to perform various tasks, such as creating notes, setting alarms, and adding calendar events. However, it remains unclear whether the AI assistant will also support more advanced actions like editing or deleting entries. The integration of Gemini into Xiaomi’s ecosystem is expected to enhance productivity and streamline user interactions with core applications.

Xiaomi has clarified that the availability of this AI-powered feature will depend on the device model, region, and language preferences. Additionally, since Gemini operates as a cloud-based service, an active internet connection will be required for it to function within Xiaomi’s apps. Users of the Xiaomi 15 series will likely access these features through the Gemini AI assistant, further integrating Google’s AI capabilities into Xiaomi’s ecosystem.

Beyond Gemini, Xiaomi continues to expand its AI-driven features, which have primarily been focused on camera enhancements and the China-exclusive Super Xiao AI assistant. The Xiaomi 15 series also introduces Google’s Circle to Search, a visual AI-powered lookup tool that enhances search capabilities through intuitive screen interactions. With these advancements, Xiaomi is solidifying its position as a key player in the AI-powered smartphone era while offering users a more intelligent and seamless experience.
