Fresh Insights: Apple Unveils tvOS 17.4 Beta 3, Revealing Potential HomePod With Display

Unveiling New Device: tvOS 17.4 Beta 3 References Codenamed Z314, Possibly Hinting at Upcoming HomePod Variant

Rumors of Apple’s development of a HomePod equipped with a display have been circulating for nearly a year, and recent findings within the company’s software suggest that this project is advancing. Following the launch of the second generation HomePod in January 2023, speculation intensified about a potential iteration featuring a built-in screen akin to the Amazon Echo Show, promising enhanced functionality. Reports indicate that this display could measure 7 inches, serving both as an entertainment hub and a platform for video calls.

The latest clue surfaced within the codes of the tvOS 17.4 beta 3 update released on Tuesday, February 13. During analysis, 9to5Google uncovered references to a mysterious device labeled as Z314, capable of running the operating system. Notably, this unidentified device is reportedly powered by the A15 Bionic chipset, indicating robust performance capabilities. Additionally, reports suggest that production versions of this device are undergoing testing, hinting at its imminent release.

While these details may initially appear disparate, they collectively hint at the development of a HomePod variant featuring a display. As tvOS is compatible with both Apple TV and HomePod, speculation suggests that this device could serve either function. However, neither device traditionally utilizes the A15 Bionic chipset, prompting further intrigue.

Notably, previous reports have suggested that Apple may be experimenting with using the iPad mini 6 as a display companion for the HomePod, given its compatibility with tvOS 17 and shared A15 Bionic chipset architecture. This convergence of clues points to an exciting development in Apple’s product lineup, fueling anticipation among tech enthusiasts awaiting the unveiling of this innovative HomePod variant.

Apart from this, there were additional hints that point to the new HomePod. As per the report, the update adds the SwiftUI framework to the HomePod firmware. SwiftUI is a user interface framework for building user interfaces for Apple’s operating systems. HangTracer, a system to debug unresponsive UI was also added. The report points out that these additions would not be required for the HomePod unless Apple was planning to add a display interface to it.

In March 2023, tipster Ming-Chi Kuo first tipped that a display-fitted HomePod could be in the works. He highlighted that the new product could feature a 7-inch display and might launch in the first half of 2024. Tianma Microelectronics, an electronic technology company that supplies displays to other businesses, was said to be the exclusive panel supplier for Apple’s redesigned HomePod. More details of the purported smart speaker with a built-in display are likely to arrive in the coming months.
