Instagram Testing Cross-Posting Images to Threads: Report

Instagram Tests Opt-In Feature for Cross-Posting Images to Threads with New Toggle

Threads, Meta’s microblogging service that rivals X (formerly Twitter), is testing support for cross-posting content from Instagram. According to a report, some Instagram accounts now have the option to post an image to both Instagram and Threads simultaneously. This follows previous tests by Meta of similar cross-posting functionality with the Facebook app. Currently, the feature is limited to cross-posting images and is being tested with select users, but it may eventually roll out to all users.

TechCrunch reports that a new toggle has appeared for some Instagram users, allowing them to cross-post images to Threads. Users must opt-in to use this feature, and it remains unclear if the toggle will stay enabled for future posts once activated. As the feature is still in the testing phase, not all users can access it, including the staff at Gadgets 360.

At present, the cross-posting feature only supports sharing images from Instagram to Threads. Sharing Reels or other types of content is not yet supported. Therefore, users who wish to share vertical videos or other content formats on Threads must upload them manually, even if their Instagram account has the cross-posting option enabled.

The limited rollout suggests that Meta is gauging user response and functionality before a wider release. If the tests prove successful, users can expect a more seamless content-sharing experience between Instagram and Threads in the future.

This move could potentially enhance user engagement on Threads by leveraging Instagram’s extensive user base. It also indicates Meta’s strategy to integrate its platforms more closely, providing users with a unified experience across its social media services.

As testing continues, further updates and refinements to the feature are expected. Users and industry watchers alike will be keen to see how this integration develops and whether it will expand to include other content types and Meta’s suite of apps.

Instagram users can currently cross-post content and Stories to their Facebook accounts by enabling a toggle on their account. When the option to simultaneously share images to Threads is enabled, it is likely to offer the same functionality as the Facebook cross posting tool, remain an opt-in feature. according to the report.
