German TikTok Users Show Greater Sympathy for China, Russia, Poll Reveals

Germans who rely on TikTok for news are less critical of China and Russia and more skeptical of climate change and vaccine effectiveness compared to consumers of traditional media, according to a recent survey by Allensbach, commissioned by a foundation linked to Germany’s liberal Free Democrats.

The poll highlights that only 28.1% of TikTok users fully agreed that China is a dictatorship, compared to 57% of newspaper readers and 56.5% of public TV viewers. Similarly, just 13.6% of TikTok users supported Western backing for Ukraine in its war against Russia, a view shared by 40.2% of national newspaper readers.

The findings come amid U.S. debates on whether to enforce a ban on TikTok over national security concerns, adding weight to arguments that the Chinese-owned app spreads misinformation that could undermine democratic societies.

Key Findings:

  • Perception of China: TikTok users are less likely to view China as a dictatorship.
  • Views on Russia: Fewer TikTok users see Russia’s invasion of Ukraine as illegal or support Germany aiding Kyiv.
  • Skepticism on Vaccines and Climate Change: Only 69% of TikTok users under 29 agreed that vaccines saved millions of lives, compared to 71% of all under-29s.
  • Distrust in Media: TikTok users are more likely to distrust traditional Western media and to believe the German government spreads misinformation, while being less critical of disinformation from China and Russia.

These attitudes align with broader trends among younger Germans, who are TikTok’s core demographic and have shown increased support for the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party in recent elections.

Disinformation Concerns

The survey also raises alarms about foreign actors, especially Russia, spreading disinformation via social media platforms to advance their agendas. Researchers cited parallels with Romania, where a pro-Russian outsider gained significant traction through social media campaigns in a presidential election later annulled.

Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger, deputy chair of the foundation behind the survey, emphasized TikTok’s influence, saying, “Young people are far more vulnerable to information, and TikTok plays a decisive role. We mustn’t allow Chinese and Russian misinformation to spread in our midst.”

TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, has not commented on the survey.

European Central Bank Joins Bluesky, Rival to Elon Musk’s X

The European Central Bank (ECB) has started posting on the Bluesky platform, a competitor to Elon Musk’s X, formerly known as Twitter. The ECB’s move to join Bluesky comes as Musk intensifies his political campaigning in Europe, including urging voters in Germany to support a far-right party. Bluesky is one of several platforms attempting to challenge X’s dominance following Musk’s acquisition of the site.

An ECB spokesperson explained that the central bank aims to diversify its social media presence and had started engaging with several new platforms last year, making Bluesky the latest addition. The ECB’s initial post on Bluesky included an interview with its chief economist, Philip Lane, which was also shared on X. The ECB plans to continue using X alongside its new presence on Bluesky.

Musk’s political influence on X has been controversial, with critics accusing the platform of enabling the spread of misinformation. Recently, Musk hosted the leader of Germany’s far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party on X, an interaction that the European Commission has stated it will monitor for disinformation. Musk has also supported Italy’s right-wing Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni.

In contrast, the ECB, under President Christine Lagarde, has focused on issues like gender equality and climate change. Musk, a vocal critic of diversity, equity, and inclusion policies, has also been outspoken against climate change efforts, supporting figures like former President Donald Trump, who has labeled climate change a hoax. Musk’s stance on the Federal Reserve has been similarly critical, calling the institution “absurdly overstaffed” and advocating for its dissolution.

Despite Bluesky’s recent growth, with 2.5 million new users added after Trump’s election, it remains much smaller than its competitors. Threads has around 252 million monthly active users, while X has approximately 317 million, according to Sensor Tower data. However, Bluesky has faced challenges with EU regulators, who criticized the platform last year for not providing essential details about its user base in the region.

Google Partners with Indian Initiative to Purchase Carbon Removal Credits

Google has signed a major deal with Indian supplier Varaha to purchase carbon credits derived from an initiative that turns agricultural waste into biochar, a form of charcoal that removes carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere and returns it to the soil. This deal, one of the largest of its kind involving biochar, marks Google’s first involvement in India’s carbon dioxide removal (CDR) sector.

CDR initiatives are becoming an increasingly important method for tech companies to offset their emissions. While direct CO2 capture technologies are often expensive, biochar offers a more cost-effective and scalable alternative. Biochar has the added benefit of improving soil health, making it a promising solution for global carbon removal, according to Randy Spock, Google’s carbon removal lead.

Under the agreement, Varaha will convert waste from smallholder farms in India into biochar, which can store CO2 for centuries. The biochar will also be used as a fertilizer alternative. Google plans to buy 100,000 tons of carbon credits through this partnership by 2030. Varaha estimates that India’s agricultural waste could generate enough biochar to store over 100 million tons of CO2 annually.

While CDR solutions like biochar have garnered interest in the global carbon market, some critics argue they cannot replace the need for direct emission reductions. Despite these concerns, Varaha’s CEO, Madhur Jain, believes that even temporary solutions are crucial in combating climate change.
