Google Unveils AI-Powered Tool for Creating Personalized Travel Itineraries

Google is introducing updates to its Search Generative Experience (SGE), enabling users to create travel itineraries and trip ideas using AI. This feature is currently available in English in the U.S. to users enrolled in Search Labs, an experimental program allowing users to test early-stage Google Search experiences and provide feedback.

Drawing on information from various websites, user reviews, photos, and submitted details, the AI-generated itineraries offer suggestions for attractions, restaurants, flights, and hotels based on user input. For instance, users can request trip plans like “plan me a three-day trip to Philadelphia that’s all about history.”

At present, these itineraries serve as recommendations, with no direct options to purchase services or experiences. Users can export their finalized itineraries to Gmail, Docs, or Maps for further planning.

Google has not disclosed plans for a wider rollout of this feature, but it demonstrates the company’s exploration of AI applications in travel planning. Competing with startups like Mindtrip and Layla, which offer AI assistants for trip planning, Google aims to collect data on travel purchasing intent while assessing user interest in such services. This move aligns with Google’s broader strategy of enhancing its travel offerings and leveraging AI capabilities to enrich user experiences and gather valuable insights for its advertising business.
